Anyone else find sleep after a drink?

I'm not a big drinker but I do enjoy a few at weekends and on the odd night out.
I've found as I've got older i don't sleep as well but more recently I can barely sleep at all.
Last night I had half A bottle of red and was awake from 3 am, I feel shattered.
I've had similar with gin too.
It sounds silly but I dont really want to give it up particularly for things like holidays and Christmas but I think I may have to 😰
Does anyone else find this?

Oops obvious mistake in the thread title

Yep, and it's one of the reasons I barely drink these days. Awake at 4am and head full of worries and self-loathing.

Just not worth it.

NotUmbongoUnchained · 17/11/2018 08:48

I can’t get to sleep at all if I drink unless I’m absolutely smashed. It’s so annoying as I love a glass of wine on a Saturday night with xfactor!

Morning OP, yep I'm exactly the same it's rubbish. Saw a friend for dinner last night had a G &T before, half s bottle of Prosecco then a G&T to finish. Home and in bed by 11. Awake from 4am with that awful sound in my ears like rushing water (what is that?) and could hear my heartbeat too.

Soo tired now and a busy day ahead. Sad

Badwifey · 17/11/2018 08:53

Yes this has just started for me only recently. I'm not a big drinker but have a couple of glasses of wine sometimes at the weekend. I had 2 glasses of red last week and I must have woken up about 10/12 times that night. Very vivid dreams too and holy shit the worst hangovers ever

shecamefromgreece · 17/11/2018 08:57

Yes me, I had three glasses of red last night and was awake really early with the worst anxiety. Just everything going round and round in my head.

Userplusnumbers · 17/11/2018 08:57

I find I can fall asleep incredibly quickly after a drink, but it's never a restful sleep - awake on the hour, every hour!

Branleuse · 17/11/2018 09:07

Yeah thats normal.
I dont drink much for this reason. One glass if red wine or one cider is fine.
Any more than that and it affects my sleep badly, and i cant drink white wine or white spirits at all without insomnia

DragonMamma · 17/11/2018 09:10

I find this if I start drinking too early. So it tends to happen if I have a couple of glasses with Sunday lunch, so I try not to anymore. If I have a few glasses in the evening, I’m usually fine and sleep well.

FekkoThePenguin · 17/11/2018 09:13

Alcohol is the thief of sleep. You either wake up in the early hours feeling anxious or sleep like the dead and wake up feeling stuff and sore (from not naturally moving in your sleep).

It's just not worth it!

tenorladybeaker · 17/11/2018 09:15

I never have more than a small glass of red wine as it massively disrupts my sleep. I can drink white wine in larger quantities without trouble.

FayKnights · 17/11/2018 09:22

I get the same. Isn’t it something to do with the alcohol turning to sugar, so you effectively having a huge sugar rush in the middle of the night?

CrookedMe · 17/11/2018 09:25

Yep. I'm going out tonight and if I'm honest with myself, I know I'd rather not. I'll doze on and off all night and be up by 7, whereas DH will be comatose until 11 at least.

JaiNotJay · 17/11/2018 09:28

Me, it's why I've pretty much stopped drinking. I'll have the occasional glass of wine but that's it.

BoogleMcGroogle · 17/11/2018 09:31

Yes, exactly this. I drink too much about twice a year, thinking I'm so clever at the time. Then I wake at two, parched, still drunk, tired and sleepless. It's horrible!

Ah, but sometimes it's so worth it! I'm meeting friends this afternoon for drinks (nd no doubt a fair few drinks!) and I can't wait. I'll put up with the restless sleep tonight for cocktails and a few bottles of prosecco!

Ledkr · 17/11/2018 11:37

It's so annoying isn't it? I was looking forward to a few drinks over Xmas and now I can't even face that. I have thrown remainder of the wine away and have bought a bottle of nice tonic to quaff later 😫I am officially tee total

ihatethecold · 17/11/2018 11:53

I’m sure it’s all the sugar and maybe as we get older it affects us differently.
My heart races like crazy when I’m trying to fall asleep.

PixieMiss · 17/11/2018 12:02

I fall asleep straight away but its the pounding headache that wakes me up in the middle of the night! And im only 25 😫

ZackPizzazz · 17/11/2018 12:58

DH calls it ginsomnia. The alcohol raises your blood sugar and you then have a crash, which awakens you.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplands · 17/11/2018 13:24

MrsJb ahhh afternoon drinking is great isn't it? Hope it's sunny whenever you're off to, have a great time!

tellmewhenthespaceshiplands · 17/11/2018 13:25

Does anyone know what that rushing water sound is that you get when your hangover wakes you at 4am?! And no, it's not coz I'm pissing the bed Wink!

Ledkr · 17/11/2018 14:03

I have had the rushing sound before but only when I've been to a club or gig so I presume it's the loud noise effect.
I'm already looking forward to a good sleep tonight

I would give clear liquids à try like vodka

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 17/11/2018 14:06

I ended up drinking 3 glasses of white wine last night. I slept ok but still feel shattered and have major nausea, don't feel good at all.
