Anyone else find sleep after a drink?

I'm not a big drinker but I do enjoy a few at weekends and on the odd night out.
I've found as I've got older i don't sleep as well but more recently I can barely sleep at all.
Last night I had half A bottle of red and was awake from 3 am, I feel shattered.
I've had similar with gin too.
It sounds silly but I dont really want to give it up particularly for things like holidays and Christmas but I think I may have to 😰
Does anyone else find this?

I’d love to find a solution to this! Apart from giving up altogether. I’ve cut down and that doesn’t work, a couple of glasses or even just one glass and my sleep is disturbed.

Yesterday I even had a few glasses at lunchtime and nothing in the evening. Yet still slept badly.

Ledkr · 17/11/2018 15:14

I'd like a solution as well. I only drink at the weekend but this means I end up exhausted by Sunday and start the week knackered.

Same for me! Great reason to give it up.

I find if I match wine for water it's not so bad.

Gah, life is short. I don’t drink to excess but I just want to be able to enjoy a glass of wine or two wothkiut feeling utterly exhausted the next day. Completely see why people give up though...

FernetBranca · 17/11/2018 15:24

Flipping this round, I’m having a month off alcohol and I’m sleeping so well. It’s a real pleasure. Gah! If I lose weight as well it’s going to be difficult to go back (although I bet I will!)

thenewaveragebear1983 · 17/11/2018 16:06

Me too, gin is the worst culprit for me. If I drink red wine I often feel very sleepy sat downstairs then as soon as I get into bed I feel literally wide awake. It’s worse if I begin to sober up eg if We walk home from a night out, or if we stay up after we’ve stopped drinking. I also find I struggle to get to sleep even if I haven’t drank and my Fitbit shows that I go to sleep for 20 minutes or so and then wake up wide awake.

I only drink 14 units or less each week (we have an app to track it!) but I really feel like it’s alcohol related, even though I only drink twice a week as well. It’s making me feel unhealthy and miserable.

bofsy1 · 17/11/2018 16:10

Allergy alert!

Alcohol is the new Gluten.

LaurieFairyCake · 17/11/2018 16:11

There's no solution apart from not drinking Sad

It's basically a 40-50ish thing. Once you're past menopause you can drink again (apparently)

It's a hormonal coupled with ageing thing

pretzelflipzaretheanswer · 17/11/2018 16:28

Yes, this is definitely a thing as you get older.

I used to be able to drink A LOT in my 20's fall into bed and sleep for 10-12 hours. Wake up feeling a bit rough, but not like I'm going to die... like I do now Confused (now 34)

I didn't actually think it was the sugar rush, I always thought it was because alcohol is a stimulant.

For the headachy mumsnetters, drink loads of water before bed and again, if you do wake up in the night. Alcohol dehydrates you and that's what can cause the headaches. Oh and don't binge on salty snacks before bed, if you've got the munchies. Another dehydrater.

Delatron · 17/11/2018 16:32

I do think it’s a peri-menopause, age thing.

Seems better for my parents in their 60s who drink then sleep like logs. I’ve also lost my ability to have a lie in. So in my youth I’d sleep it all off and feel great!

Notjustanyone · 17/11/2018 17:06

Same happened to me in July and I just thought fuck that I would rather sleep than drink so I don't drink now. I love how I can drive home after a night out and at whatever time I want. Saved loads of money too!

Laiste · 17/11/2018 17:21

I've had this my whole adult life.

I never get a hangover if i stick to 'my' drink no matter how much of it i have (JD and cherry coke) - however; DH and i are always really knackered the day after we've had a drink. Even if we'd not stayed up massively late.

We moan the next day and say we've ''slept the sleep of the drunk''. It just doesn't seem like proper sleep.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 17/11/2018 18:00

I read that it’s not the alcohol per se, it’s the body counteracting the sedative effect with adrenaline, which is why we feel wired and unable to sleep.

Wellhellothere101 · 17/11/2018 18:08

Yes I read that too. Think alcohol is a central nervous system depressant, so as it wears off your body produces adrenaline to get your CNS back to normal. I sleep terribly when I drink too and it totally shows on my face the next day.....I don't drink too much and I would feel a bit derived if I had to give up completely.

ihatethecold · 17/11/2018 18:09

I take this before and after any alcohol to help me not feel rough. It does help.

www.organicburst.com/products/chlorella

It helps my liver process the alcohol.

bofsy1 · 17/11/2018 18:13

So many Puritans.

Relax, I know this, you will recover post menopause. Oh the joys.

Growingboys · 17/11/2018 18:16

I find spirits are better than wine, so drink gin (or beer actually) rather than wine if I can.

I prefer wine at lunchtime - normally I will sleep fine if I've had a couple of glasses of wine at lunch. But wine at night ruins my sleep.

It is very depressing. I have cut my intake right back because of it. But there's no way I'm stopping altogether. I love a good glass of wine with food, and a nice gin before dinner. And a piss up with my friends. But for that I tend to decide in advance that that's what I'm doing and I accept I'll have a crap night's sleep as a result.

Growingboys · 17/11/2018 18:21

Looking forward to the post-menopause piss up!

(How long does the menopause last?)

Mich0027 · 17/11/2018 18:22

Why does nobody's tell you that this happens when you hit 40??! It's ruining my life ffs. Ok bit dramatic but I'm off the booze too (virtually) and I used to love love love red wine. Can't drink it. Unless I want the sleepless night, super hangxiety, palpitations and the weird wooshing noise. I'm soooooo excited to read a post above that says you can drink again after the menopause. Come to me now god bless Mother Nature!

Autumn101 · 17/11/2018 18:28

I’m 37 and this problem has been getting steadily worse since 35! I got drunk on Thursday and only got 3 hours broken sleep, was awful......

I’ve now turned into a stereotypical binge drinker - I either have nothing or loads to make it worth the sleepless night!

Lineofbeauty · 17/11/2018 18:28

Ohhhhh. It's a relief for me to read this. I find I can't have much booze any more for this very reason. But it is really annoying as I love booze. I'm approaching menopause.

bofsy1 · 17/11/2018 18:30

Mich.

We are controlled to within an inch of our lives. Mostly by men who tell us wimmins what to do.

Relax, I am a veteran of the red wine terrors. But am fine again now having come out the other side. Try clear drinks if you can for the duration.

pointythings · 17/11/2018 18:44

This is why I only drink alcohol on weekends - even a glass of wine reduces my quality of sleep, and I love sleep.

Makes it a lot easier to not grab the odd glass on a weeknight when I know I have to be at work the next day though - the temptation is just not there at all.

Mich0027 · 17/11/2018 18:45

I'm on the gin. But only dare have a couple. For the next 10 years 😩😩

bofsy1 · 17/11/2018 18:52

Mich,

Whatever gets you through the night, right!

But the red wine terrors will subside. I know this. Hell for a while and then Merlot on tap!
