Are there any truly family friendly TV series?

I sat down to watch the Durrells with DD's age 7&6....it was rated 7+ on Netflix.

We are really honest about sex, babies etc so I don't think I'm a prude(?) BUT I just don't think it was appropriate?

Lines like "we think the sex will calm you down" - how do I explain that to a 7yr old?!

SO

Can you recommend any good family watching that all of us will enjoy? From DH 44 to DD 6 (who enjoys things like my fair lady so it doesn't need to be modern). Dr Who would be too scary!

Legomasters

HairyHoundofBudapest · 15/11/2018 16:39

That looks good! It's not something I would have looked at myself...

Modern family?

Friday night dinner is a hit with my kids but they're teenagers so haven't noticed if it's age appropriate or not

You could always have a look at the 1987 version (about the Durrell family) called My Family And Other Animals www.imdb.com/title/tt0166450/. It's brilliant and charming - and very family friendly.

I adored MFAOA, so started watching The Durrells when it came out - didn't like it nearly so much.

SavoyCabbage · 15/11/2018 16:53

Not Modern Family. There are a lot of sexual references.

We used to watch the Cosby Show as our family programme but that’s off the table now!

Fresh off the Boat is good.

My two absolutely loved Larkrise to Candleford.

Everybody loves Raymond GrinGrinGrinGrin

on channel 4 every morning but it might be an idea to wait until it begins again from series 1 so you can "get" the characters etc

From old TV .......

Black Beauty
Ballet Shoes

Not sure if you can still find these tv series online anywhere

Little House on the prairie

On freeview but can't remember which channel

CandyAppleRed · 15/11/2018 17:03

The Two Ronnies

StereophonicallyChallenged · 15/11/2018 17:03

The Middle & Malcolm in the Middle are both harmless and enjoyed by ds and I together.

I'm sure there are more that I can't think of right now.

CandyAppleRed · 15/11/2018 17:04

Horrible Histories- we all love that programme especially the original ones

wafflyversatile · 15/11/2018 17:05

you know there were probably lots of sexual references in some of the programmes you watched as a kid. You just don't remember them because you didn't notice them.

Ginazon · 15/11/2018 17:05

Yonderland!

Ginazon · 15/11/2018 17:05

Hilda (on Netflix)

Marylou2 · 15/11/2018 17:06

The Middle is a good family show.

HairyHoundofBudapest · 15/11/2018 17:19

Yes I agree Waffy, but DD turned to me and said "how can sex calm you down" which I couldn't quite find the right words to answer...
I don't mind the occasional sex reference.

Modern Family is mainly about sex!

We love:

The Middle
Young Sheldon
Everybody hates Chris
Millie Inbetween
Tracy Beaker
Open all hours
Dumping Ground
Dani's Castle

NancyDonahue · 15/11/2018 17:48

Oh and The Goldbergs

lots33 · 15/11/2018 17:50

We’ve just got into Full house - USA sitcom from the 80s on Netflix. It,s quite funny!

CountFosco · 15/11/2018 18:22

We like the 'Back in Time for...' series. Lots of child friendly social history. DD1 (10) really likes Lucy Worsley as well but be wary of Mary Beard, I had to explain to an 8 year old what a prostitute was thanks to her series about Rome! Any natural history programme is usually pretty good and we all love Strictly but just the Saturday and Sunday shows for LOs. Doctor Who is the only 'family' drama we watch as a family but the 6 year old is still too young for it, he still finds SJA too scary.

PiperPublickOccurrences · 15/11/2018 18:24

We all love Lego Masters. Also the Secret Life of the Zoo.

CountFosco · 15/11/2018 18:25

My two absolutely loved Larkrise to Candleford

Oh that's a good call. DD2 adored Little Women when it was on last Christmas. Sunday night period drama might be a good bet, but not Call the Midwife, it's too traumatic!

IHeartKingThistle · 15/11/2018 18:26

A Series of Unfortunate Events on Netflix. And YY to Lego Masters!

Hellsbells35 · 15/11/2018 18:31

My 3yo loves Doctor Who! He doesn’t find it scary at all. He knows it’s not real. We even have to throw a Dr Who birthday party now. Plus free are loads you can catch up on

Awrite · 15/11/2018 18:35

Full House - a thousand times Full House. The most wholesome programme ever made.

My 8 year old loves Frasier. Think it's the slapstick element. And Eddie the dog of course.

Awrite · 15/11/2018 18:36

As for cartoons that adults may enjoy - Kung Julian and Boss Baby. Both very funny.
