Drivers.. How often do you...

Stall
Use the wrong gear
Misjudge getting into a parking space and have to line it up again
Accidentally cut someone up
Touch the kerb while parking.

Any other driving mistakes you can think of?

I never stall, misjudge gears or cut anyone up.

Occasionally misjudge a parking space and have to straighten up.

WildFlower2018 · 15/11/2018 16:54

I've been driving for about 9 years but I don't drive all that regularly.

Stall - not too often these days

Use the wrong gear - occasionally

Misjudge getting into a parking space and have to line it up again - not unknown! I tend to just opt for spaces I "know" I'll get in easily and walk half way across the car park to where I want to go.

Accidentally cut someone up - don't think I've done this in a while.

Touch the kerb while parking. - more often than I care to admit hahaha.

WildFlower2018 · 15/11/2018 16:55

Having to have a couple of goes at parallel parking, not straight in - I haven't parallel parked once since passing my test 9 yrs ago

Juanbablo · 15/11/2018 17:17

I've been learning for 18 months and passed my test a few weeks ago. I stall probably once every few weeks although the other day I did it twice in one day. But hadn't for ages before that. I rarely go in the wrong gear. 50% of the time I have to straighten up when parking. Have bumped the kerb whilst parking once. I avoid parallel parking at all costs.

Juanbablo · 15/11/2018 17:17

I can't remember cutting anyone up.

BigBumandMumTum · 15/11/2018 17:29

The cutting someone up was because I swapped from my little nippy petrol car to my husbands big cumbersome diesel people carrier, I wouldn't usually but mine would have been well away before the other car got to me.

I won't do that again.

Stall- rarely, once a year or so
Use the wrong gear- occasionally I forget to change to first at light etc but realise quickly when the bite is hard to get!
Misjudge getting into a parking space and have to line it up again- all the time
Accidentally cut someone up- very rarely
Touch the kerb while parking.- very rarely

DoveSecret · 15/11/2018 17:59

There’s a car park in town where the entrance is at a very awkward left angle and it has a barrier on the right. You have to keep left to ensure clearance but my tyres scraped the kerb and the yellow paint they had put on was still wet. Jeez, i scrubbed and peeled.

Managed to hide it from DH by parking away from the window and it only has a bit left.

Babybearsporij · 15/11/2018 18:08

Stall - can't remember last time I stalled
Use the wrong gear - ditto
Misjudge getting into a parking space and have to line it up again - almost every time!
Accidentally cut someone up - occasionally
Touch the kerb while parking. - nearly always.

My spatial awareness is not my strong point!

ShatnersBassoon · 15/11/2018 18:14

I sometimes have to straighten up reversing into tight parking spaces.

I don't think I've ever cut anyone up, and I haven't stalled or fumbled gears since I was learning to drive.

Willow1992 · 15/11/2018 18:19

Interesting thread, I have only been driving a year...

Stall Very rarely, the last time I did was edging along at under 5 mph for ages.
Use the wrong gear I don't really do this.
Misjudge getting into a parking space and have to line it up again Most times I park, I am a bit embarrassed at my parking tbh! Hoping that improves, though I am badly coordinated even out of the car.
Accidentally cut someone up I haven't done that in a good while now. I will admit when I was a new driver in the first few months I did a few times. Always felt shaken thinking what if I had caused an accident.
Touch the kerb while parking. I am not too bad at this, though I might occasionally if it is an awkward spot/angle.

didyouseetheflaresinthesky · 15/11/2018 19:11

I never stall but that because I drive an auto and physically cant. Otherwise I probably stall every few weeks on steep hills.

Very rarely scrape the curb or cut anyone up but am a fucker for pulling away in second or even third. I think because my car would do it I got used to it. I miss that car sometimes. Auto is nicer but it used to let me get away with murder.

Mesmeri · 15/11/2018 19:37

Ha ha, I do all of those things occasionally, though not all on the same day, I hope!

I've been driving for 23 years, 15 of them were as a professional driver (coaches and LGVs) so have also done numerous tests, advanced driving/development courses. Used to do about 12,000 kilometres a month, throughout continental Europe (a lot of city centres as well as highways) and the UK. So I have a fair amount of experience. Enough to know precisely how poor my judgment can sometimes be.

And you know what it's taught me - human beings are not good drivers!! Anyone who tells you they don't make mistakes is either lying or very inexperienced or both.

Rant over.

ProfessorMoody · 15/11/2018 20:27

Not lying, or inexperienced. Just don't do any of them.

GeorgeTheHippo · 15/11/2018 20:29

I have had my licence thirty years. I haven't done any of those things (except maybe line up a second time for a parallel park) for at least twenty.

SoyDora · 15/11/2018 20:29

I’ve been driving 16 years. The only one I can remember doing in the past few years is touching the kerb while parking.

Upsy1981 · 15/11/2018 20:36

Wrong gear fairly regularly! But not enough to cause a problem, just a bit of a jerk.

I reverse park quite often as I enjoy it (weird!) But every so often there will just be a time when I don't start in quite the right position and I just know its not going to work. Usually because the car park is busy and there is someone behind me who is waiting to get past so I feel under pressure! However, my DH would say he never has to correct himself but that's because he won't ever reverse park!

adaline · 15/11/2018 20:41

I've been driving a year.

Not stalled in a long time (probably six months), I've been in the wrong gear a few times but it's never been a problem. I've not touched the kerb while parking for a while but it happens.

However none of those things are really dangerous and aren't a problem so long as you correct them right away.

JustBeingJobless · 15/11/2018 20:42

I can’t remember the last time I did any of them, but I’ve been driving for 23 years now.

Chrisinthemorning · 15/11/2018 20:45

Stall - rarely
Use the wrong gear- never, Drive an automatic
Misjudge getting into a parking space and have to line it up again- often
Accidentally cut someone up- rarely
Touch the kerb while parking- all the time
I’m a terrible driver- although I have been driving 24 years and never had points on my licence or (touch wood) an accident.

Holidayshopping · 15/11/2018 20:51

Only the parking for me-straightening up in a space is pretty usual procedure though, isn’t it?

I do tend to look for a ‘througie’ in a car park though Grin-I’d rather do that and then walk across the car park, than struggle into a nearer space!

safariboot · 15/11/2018 22:08

Stall fairly often in stop-start traffic or when reversing, maybe once a year otherwise.

Use the wrong gear all the bloody time lol. It's my engine and I'll lug it if I want to.

Misjudge getting into a parking space and have to line it up again mebbe once or twice a month?

Accidentally cut someone up to my knowledge rarely. I'd say I get honked maybe once a year, though ofc not all other drivers will honk when cut up.

Touch the kerb while parking. Every time. If I don't tap the kerb it means I parked too far away from it. I know itd be a driving test fail (and on my lessons and test obv didn't) but now I don't care. I dry steer too, I know it's bad for the car but when I'm getting into or out of a tight space I think I kind of have too.

safariboot · 15/11/2018 22:11

PS: for parking the above is for parallel. For bays I'll usually reverse most of a quarter turn, but might need to pull forward a bit to line up before finally reversing in. (I rarely pull in unless it's a through space; don't like backing out). But I'd never need to do a complete do-over with bay parking.
