Slattern alert! My washing machine is horrifying!

I’ve just taken the drawer out of my washing machine and I actually let out a little shriek.

It’s mouldy and horrific Shock.

It’s never happened to me before. Cleaned the drawer out before and it’s not looked at all like that. It’s never happened with previous machines either.

What do I do about this? It’s too small to get properly in there for a good scrub.

I use soda crystals in my every day wash and wash on 40.

I shall attach a pic so you can all gasp at my shame.

I have never done it, but I believe the Mumsnet response will be put it in the dishwasher (if you have one).

CoperCabana · 14/11/2018 16:35

God ignore me! It is your machine that is grotty and I can’t imagine that would fit in your dishwasher!!! Blush

jerkkneed · 14/11/2018 16:36

Mine does this all the time! Have to get those washing machine cleaner kits from the wtf aisle in Aldi fairly often.

The rubber seal at the front of mine is a horror show too!

It's such a reliable machine though (15 years old, never had an issue) that I daren't get rid of it for a new one! Everyone tells me not to!

dementedpixie · 14/11/2018 16:36

Spray bleach spray around inside. Use a toothbrush to scrub at the roof bit and any other bits you can reach. Try and get your hand in with a microfibre cloth to get at the back wall

Getoffthetableplease · 14/11/2018 16:38

Scrub it out with soda crystals and a toothbrush for a good clean. Most of it should easily come off with any spray and wipe though.

PickAChew · 14/11/2018 16:38

Have a go with some Dr beckmanns, though it will barely touch the surface.

Using fabric conditioner and liquid detergents tends to be the cause.

NotExactlyHappyToHelp · 14/11/2018 16:42

Ahh toothbrush that’s doable! Curse my porky hands!

Might convince DS to glove up and help me. He’s got useful little child hands.

I’ll buy a cleaning kit thingy tomorrow.

I do use fabric conditioner but I use those Persil powergems in the drum.

Mortified I am. What a scuzz bucket 🙈😂.

That’s bad!
Spray some HG Mould remover in there, and leave it to do its thing then rinse well.

FadedRed · 14/11/2018 16:44

Meh, it happens.
Spray with copious amount of mould and mildew spay cleaner. Leave for five minutes, then clean with a washing up brush/old toothbrush. Rinse throughly by spraying with clean hot water, clean your powder container drawer itch mould and mildew spray and brush, rinse thoroughly. Put machine on empty hot wash cycle.
Job done.
Wear gloves and make sure you don't get any cleaner on your skin/hands face.
Are you using powder or liquid detergent - powder is better for reducing mould than liquids or gels.
Do a regular empty hot wash will also help to keep your machine cleaner.

MaverickSnoopy · 14/11/2018 16:56

You're supposed to clean it?!!!!

bellanotte22 · 14/11/2018 17:00

I just cleaned mine today. Bit of mould and mildew remover and a microfibre cloth sorted it. Then I ran a 90°C empty wash with a capful of zoflora. It's all shiny now!

thenightsky · 14/11/2018 17:06

Do you live in a high limescale area? My previous machine got like this (probably worse). Then I need to get a new machine about a week after I got a water softener fitted. This was about 3 years ago and the new machine has never grown black stuff, not even a tiny bit.

I think the calcium must build up and make the shiny surfaces rough, enabling mould to get a hold and grow. Well its a theory Smile

NotExactlyHappyToHelp · 14/11/2018 18:15

Yes we do. It’s very very high limescale. I’ll take that theory Smile.

I’ll endeavour to do a maintenance wash from now on. It’s just on so bloody often I never seem to find the time. I will now.

@MaverickSnoopy don’t do it. Ignorance is bliss 😂.
