How long after first orthodontist appointment for braces?

Dd is finally being referred to the orthodontist. They said it can take 6-8 weeks for first appointment, how long after that do you normally get them?

At dds first appointment she got impressions done and photographs taken of her teeth. It was then another few weeks before she got any braces put on.

Meant to say, dd had to qualify for them first and that took a few years. (If it is the nhs you are using). She was first referred around age 8 but didn't get braces until age 13

What do you mean qualify? She’s lost all her baby teeth and that’s what we were waiting for x

Are they nhs or private? Ime on nhs the first appointment is an assessment, then you return for impressions etc if you meet the criteria.

dementedpixie · 13/11/2018 17:13

Your teeth need to be 'bad' enough to qualify under nhs criteria. In dd"s case she had a baby tooth that hasn't come out and the adult tooth under the gum was pushing another tooth out of alignment. She had to get the tooth removed before treatment could start

It will also depend if the orthodontist wants any teeth removed before treatment starts. Dd saw the orthodontist for an assessment. He agreed she qualified for NHS treatment and said she needed two teeth removing first. We then had to wait for the orthodontist to write to our dentist telling them this. We were only able to make the appointment for the extraction once our dentist had the request. Once her teeth had been removed we then had to wait two weeks for her guns to heal before her braces could be fitted.

After DD had her X-rays and moulds done they sent away all the info to NHS and told us it could be 8 weeks before we were told if she was eligible. It did take the 8 weeks and I got the next available appointment when they phoned me to let me know the NHS would find them

It took a year after the dentist referred DD to actually see the orthodontist....it was then at least eight weeks after initial orthodontist apt (when we were told she doesn't qualify under nhs) before her braces were actually fitted.

Mummysharkdoodoodoo · 13/11/2018 17:30

I think she will qualify, she has buck teeth and most of her teeth are all over tha place x

When she goes they will take measurements and impressions and let you know for sure if she qualifies

Troels · 13/11/2018 17:34

Dd was refered and it was nearly 18 months later that she was sent an appointment, first visit was assessing her need, then the next a few weeks later was impressions, then a couple of weeks later was the blocks, she's had three appointments 8 weeks apart and they have been tightened, next appontment is new year. Once the jaw is moved enough she'll get get her train tracks.

dementedpixie · 13/11/2018 17:36

Dd had now been having treatment since March 2017. She's had teeth out, block braces and finally 2 sets of train tracks. She goes to the orthodontist roughly every 4 weeks

okeydokeygirl · 13/11/2018 17:57

Took a few weeks for my DD. Like #Geoffreycat above she had to have teeth out first. I could not make an appointment with the dentist until ortho had sent a letter (I did try as the 2 practices are literally next door. We then had to wait ages as the dentist was really busy. We had 3 weekly appointments at the ortho and so once teeth were removed braces fit with 2 weeks. This was NHS.

Livinglavidal0ca · 13/11/2018 17:59

2 years on the list for my sister, then after first appointment approximately 12 weeks.

theblessedDJ · 13/11/2018 21:08

There's a 4 year wait between referral by the dentist to seeing the orthodontist in our area. DD referred at just turned 12 and will probably see an orthodontist when she is around16. Shock

dontsufferfools · 13/11/2018 21:40

I am so amazed at the service I've had.

My DS has one unaligned tooth at the back of his mouth. His front teeth are perfectly straight.

He was referred July, first appt for assessment September. Last Friday impressions done, Monday this week brace fitted.

Linnet · 13/11/2018 21:53

My dd got her braces 2 weeks ago, her first appointment was last November, so it took almost a year to get to this point.

We had initial appointment when they took impressions for moulds, back again in January to see if she had been approved and find out the plan. Then we had to wait for an appointment at the hospital as she needed 4 teeth out. It took 6 months for that to come through and may have been longer if I hadn’t chased it up. Teeth were taken out in September, she should have got the braces two weeks later but we were going on holiday so it had to wait until the end of October.

SassitudeandSparkle · 13/11/2018 22:02

DD waited about 16 months to get to the top of the list, has had one appt with ortho who took impressions and said she needed the brace. Now have two appts at own dentist to have four teeth removed prior to brace fitting in mid-Jan.
