Has anyone seen the new Boots advert?

Saw it for the first time today and it’s the first time I’ve almost vomited in my own mouth watching an advert! I saw lots of people on Twitter really liked it, it made them smile and cry but honestly I found it awful! What do you think? Am I an insensitive monster for gagging at ‘she’s me mum’?!

Really upsetting for people like me who have abusive mothers. I found it painful and upsetting to watch. Christmas is hard enough not having parents to share it with because they hate me and this really reminds me what I'm missing out on my whole life.

I think she's supposed to be a mummy-martyr who never spends any money on herself and doesn't mind her DD pinching her perfume and has to sneakily borrow DD's lipstick to wear for rock choir. DD sees how happy the borrowed lipstick makes mummy-martyr so buys her a lippy of her own for Xmas Day.

Puke.

SuperstarDJ · 14/11/2018 17:24

Claire I never twigged until i read your post that the daughter bought her a lipstick because the mother borrowed hers Blush

HarrietKettleWasHere · 14/11/2018 17:26

Spanky i mean this kindly- I have a shit emotionally abusive mum- but all those adverts have the potential to upset someone somehow- what about people who can’t afford to buy any presents, or a single and wish they had a partner to spend Christmas with, or are old and lonely, or I don’t know, don’t even celebrate at all for whatever reason.

It’s a sick- making advert but it’s not personal to you or to those that have shit mums.

HarrietKettleWasHere · 14/11/2018 17:30

Im not sure about the borrowed thing- I thought the lipstick was red when the mum is singing but I’m sure the girl comes down the stairs in a purpled colour.

It also makes the mum a massive hypocrite! ‘Ere, wipe that off our lass, you look like a hooker!’

sneaks into daughter’s room to trowel on said lipstick

Ah... now it makes sense... would never have got that...

It feels wrong, because the mum is so unkind (and I like the girl with and without the make up - just two different looks), but the girl in some sort of Stockholm- syndrome act, buys the mum lipstick...

It’s the emphasis on 'me' that grates - family members who say 'me mam' skip over the word 'me' and put the emphasis on 'mam'. There’s too much emphasis on the 'me' and it doesn’t sound right.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 14/11/2018 17:49

God yes! It so crap.

It's TUI ad 2.0. Hated that one too.

Susiesoap7 · 14/11/2018 18:11

It's better than Kevin the carrot 🥕

southnownorth · 14/11/2018 18:23

I thought she bought her mum a lipstick because it was her mum's purple one she pinched. Hence, the mum's perfume being all gone as well?

CoperCabana · 14/11/2018 18:26

Well it makes me cry. Probably because I lost my mum and also because my eldest daughter is growing up too fast. I do, at least, recognise that it is dreadful. But still cry!

BramRang · 14/11/2018 18:37

It reminded me of my friend's mum when we were teens standing by the door with a packet of wipes if we'd caked the make up on a bit too much.

I don't mind the ad, but I did think the little bit of paper said 'keep shagging' when I first watched it (no glasses on) and had to rewind HmmGrin.

ClairefromMergersAcquisitions · 14/11/2018 18:45

Ahhh I may have been wrong about her nicking Molly's lipstick.

But I do think she is meant to be frumpy martyr mum. Then Molly sees how empowered she is singing with lippy on - "stunning and strong" - so she buys her some more to say "keep singing and let me grow up and be my own woman, you sad controlling frump"

Or I may just be over-thinking it!

Azzizam · 14/11/2018 18:46

Stomach churning. Cloying. Cringeworthy. And blood boiling. Awful.

Theperfectchangeling · 14/11/2018 18:53

Sorry to be on the hate side here, but It makes me stabby, in particular the “stunning and strong” Hmm line!

Theperfectchangeling · 14/11/2018 18:55

The advert offering this year so far is awful, John Lewis better have something good up their sleeves... Grin

BlancheM · 14/11/2018 19:20

Sounds like a piss take
It curdles my innards

MamaLovesMango · 14/11/2018 19:30

It earnt an eye roll from me.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 14/11/2018 19:31

Is she saying stunning? I thought she was saying sterning. Makes sense now.

Stephisaur · 14/11/2018 19:33

I quite liked it the first time I watched it last night.

However, 3 hours later, we had seen the advert a further 5 times. I now hate it with a passion.

HelenaDove · 15/11/2018 02:11

I remember my main Christmas present from 1990. No 7 Treasures. It was No 7 make up in a box shaped like a treasure chest. A Christmas present from DM.

I remember the lipsticks had little pictures or drawings of Christmas candles on them. I cant remember what little pictures were on the other items as it was so long ago. Obviously the items are long gone but i still have the treasure chest shaped box. DH uses it to keep bits + bobs in

SoleBizzz · 15/11/2018 02:18

I loved it.

You MISERABLE gits

ProudAunty2nine · 15/11/2018 04:22

I am usually not too bothered one way or another by adverts etc but I HATE THIS ONE, I don't even know why I just hate it

Sparklingbrook · 15/11/2018 04:27

It's awful. Hopefully there will be a shortened version soon. She looks great with her make up.

First rule of going out as a teen though never get ready at your own house. Wink

ShackUp · 15/11/2018 04:36

Its not a Robbie Williams song, it's by World Party, so he shouldn't get much cash!

MawkishTwaddle · 15/11/2018 08:33

'Stunning and strong'?

Is her mum Caitlyn Jenner?
