Has anyone seen the new Boots advert?

Saw it for the first time today and it’s the first time I’ve almost vomited in my own mouth watching an advert! I saw lots of people on Twitter really liked it, it made them smile and cry but honestly I found it awful! What do you think? Am I an insensitive monster for gagging at ‘she’s me mum’?!

Well, that’s going to get irritating come Christmas.

ElfinStardust · 14/11/2018 09:59

Oh it's awful, awful, awful.

And I don't get it. The girl looks 15 - why is her mum making her take nicely applied make-up off?

Me mum - why?

HarrietKettleWasHere · 14/11/2018 09:59

I also wondered why I’d woken up with Robbie Williams ‘she’s the one’ in my head the other day, I realised yesterday it was this bloody advert.

HarrietKettleWasHere · 14/11/2018 09:59

I also thought she looked nice with her make up on! She’s definitely 15/16, not 12!

Shirleyphallus · 14/11/2018 10:17

As a slightly separate point, does anyone actually watch tv with adverts anymore?

I only watch stuff on bbc / Netflix / amazon, I had to google this ad especially as I can’t remember the last time I watched tv properly

Susiesoap7 · 14/11/2018 10:23

Love it makes me cry! We northerners say me mum!

HarrietKettleWasHere · 14/11/2018 10:29

Plenty of people still watch television with adverts, Shirley ConfusedNot everything I want is on Netflix (actually hardly anything is) and many people don’t want to pay out for extra TV packages.

JosephineDupont · 14/11/2018 10:36

It was nice in some ways but :

I don't like the song.
And I found myself irritated at the use of the word "stunning."

It always makes me think of Lorraine on ITV being a slightly sycophantic.

I say "me mum" so that didn't strike me at all!

UserMe18 · 14/11/2018 10:44

Saccharine, they're all trying so hard.

AlexaAmbidextra · 14/11/2018 10:46

Awful. I thought it was hideous. 🤮

Ohyesiam · 14/11/2018 10:56

A worn out attempt at emotional manipulation, with shit acting and clunky unrealistic set up. Hope it didn’t cost them much to make.

What sort of a crap mum would shame her teen like that? What sort of a crap teen wouldn’t argue?

Emma765 · 14/11/2018 11:00

🤮🤮

It's surely 'me mam' if they were doing it properly. But then that wouldn't rhyme.

Hushnownobodycares · 14/11/2018 11:09

I've seen it but had to read this thread to jolt any memories about what it was about loose which probably isn't what Boots will want to hear Grin The only thing that stuck is thinking the tagline at then end was a bit incongruous.

I do often wonder whether the marketing departments of these places have been at the British sherry before approving most of this maudlin crap though.

HelenaDove · 14/11/2018 13:49

i do prefer last years one on female friendship

the song they used then was Alison Moyet"s Only You.

her version not a cover.

Sitranced · 14/11/2018 15:03

You just know the mum won't be wearing the lipstick. The girl bought it for the brownie points with mum and she'll be borrowing it all the time.

ElfinStardust · 14/11/2018 15:04

We northerners say me mum!

Some might - my family don't.

I'm embarrassed for people who are crying at this sappy crap!

CrispsForBreakfast · 14/11/2018 15:39

Oh Elfin I cried the first time I watched and every time since.

As a Brummie I'd be singing she's our mom. That doesn't sound as good though. Grin

IStandWithPosie · 14/11/2018 15:41

Yep. Hate it.

Why that song? Either pick a classic or pick a new modern song.

What’s the story in the ad? Mum makes her take her make up off then daughter is in awe of her mother singing carols wearing red lipstick? Confused I don’t get it.

“Me Mum” fine, if the rest of the lyrics had been sung in the same accent/dialect. But they weren’t so it sounds fake and forced.

Perfectly1mperfect · 14/11/2018 15:51

Don't mind 'me mum' but I think 'my mum' would have been better.

I think the girl looked a million times better without makeup though. And I like makeup and wouldn't have a problem with a teen wearing it. I didn't watch it at first but my 9 year old said, 'she looks prettier without the make up' so I rewound it, watched it and had to agree. I would still have spent too much money in Boots in the next few weeks without the advert though !

MawkishTwaddle · 14/11/2018 15:52

What a load of total crap. Are we all supposed to be moved to tears because some woman's joined Rock Choir?

Confused
Jojoanna · 14/11/2018 15:53

It’s rubbish

BobbinThreadbare123 · 14/11/2018 15:56

It's shite.

Leela2 · 14/11/2018 15:58

I didn't get it either. Mum makes child take make up off. Mum goes out singing wearing lipstick. Child buys mum lipstick for Christmas. I must be missing something.

OyWithThePoodles · 14/11/2018 16:30

'What sort of a crap mum would shame her teen like that? What sort of a crap teen wouldn’t argue?'

EXACTLY ohyesiam !!

southnownorth · 14/11/2018 16:35

Hate it with a passion!, Hate the way the girls sings me mum.
