He was late this morning so I did his lunch for him. I made a cake yesterday that was iced on the top only, so I cut a slice in half and turned the top bit over so the icing was In the middle and wouldn't get everywhere. He has just texted genuinely amazed at my brilliance. Who knew being supermum was so easy.......Grin

why would anyone slice those little cheese triangles..... surely everyone shoves them [still in the foil of course] down their bra until the body heat makes them squishy and spreadable? That's what I do when making packed lunches.

My mum thought I was a genius because when out for lunch one day I ut the little butter foil packets next to the hot bowl of soup so it melted and then spread easily.

BouleBaker · 14/11/2018 20:17

Cheese triangles should have a little nick made in the foil and then be used to pipe little cheesy worms all over a cheesy cracker.

You do know that this is the kind of anecdote that gets handed down the generations, don't you?

"Great granny Bertrand? She was the one who used to cut cake in that clever way..."

One of my g grandmothers must have blown their child's mind by distributing OXO cubes for Christmas and making hot drinks out of them. Still talked about 100 years later. We know virtually nothing else about her!

Learning important things here for DS when he gets to school!

Tbf I've never had that but thought it was a genius idea! Well done Bertrand 😊

Also amazed at the bread diagram. Would never have crossed my mind.

I tend to just slice the round slices into strips and then make them fit the bread. Neve thought about a bread diagram.

CheddarIsNotTheOnlyCheese · 14/11/2018 20:27

My home ec teacher told me that if you want to keep the remaining cake fresh and not dried out cut some slices of bread to size and stick them in place with cocktail sticks (or those little multicolured plastic cocktail swords that have been passed around our family since the mid 80s) I've done this at work too and the customers always say they'll do it from then on.

CheddarIsNotTheOnlyCheese · 14/11/2018 20:30

Once you're done slicing, push the 2 remaining sides into the middle so they're pressed against each other & stops the cake drying out.
All the cakes I see at work (usually birthday or wedding) have the bottom secured in place with icing.

Batter? Isn’t that what you make pancakes from?

@HUnkyDory69 I made 1.5 times the recipe in 2 shallow tins rather than the normal amount in one deep tin - we needed more cake anyway for more people and I wanted 2 good layers but I had also realised that cakes rise a bit differently in shallow or deep tins but I left the amount of bicarb the same as for 1 cake, and I also put an extra shake of ground almonds in as I always think it's just a bit too wet (I'm guessing about 3 tablespoons but just till I thought it wasn't quite so sloppy)

OP, he's 17 why are you making lunch for him? If he's late, then you should let him starve or you should have smeared that icing all over his face as a punishment. What kind of a spoiled and entitled brat are you raising here?

KisstheTeapot14 · 15/11/2018 10:50

I saw a little cocktail sword on the pavement yesterday. I thought wow - didn't know they were still around. Have you lost one Cheddar?

CheddarIsNotTheOnlyCheese · 15/11/2018 11:29

Probably. However I have hundreds of the feckers. It ain't missed.
