He was late this morning so I did his lunch for him. I made a cake yesterday that was iced on the top only, so I cut a slice in half and turned the top bit over so the icing was In the middle and wouldn't get everywhere. He has just texted genuinely amazed at my brilliance. Who knew being supermum was so easy.......Grin

I love cheese triangles, but they are buggers to slice thinly enough to cover a slice of bread. How do you do it?

Slice? Confused I just eat them from the foil. As is. If you must make sarnies then you spread it. Tis a cheese spread. Grin

Another possible game-changer (unless you've all been doing this foreverBlush)

Pizza cut-up/cuttedGrinup with scissors... Only if it's stoneground wholemeal based with a quinoa and kale toppingConfused

Well she implied she made it as members of the family were allergic to chocolate and I was curious about how this helped. As well as hungry.

2bluestars · 13/11/2018 18:52

This thread is blowing my mind. And i need lots more diagrams Grin

elephantoverthehill · 13/11/2018 19:00

I have recently learnt how to use the timer on my oven. It's a game changer. I've only had the cooker for about 10 years and showed me how to do it.

elephantoverthehill · 13/11/2018 19:01

*and DS showed me how to do it.

Micke · 13/11/2018 19:25

Has anyone mentioned the elastic band around a cut (but not peeled) apple yet - and cutting it in straight lines down parallel with the core (4 cuts, so you get a little square cornered core), so it doesn't ping apart as easily.

That one revolutionized my apple in a lunchbox experience.

WhoGivesADamnForAFlakeyBandit · 13/11/2018 19:26

Slicing dairylea? Really?

Moonflower12 · 13/11/2018 19:42

@Micke
Now I need a diagram, please....

SchadenfreudePersonified · 13/11/2018 19:45

"unbread shaped" = like circular ham slices. Quarter the ham and put the pointy corners in the corners of the bread

I just fold the edges in.

If I'd wanted to do complicated stuff with sandwich fillings, I'd have paid attention in geometry.

Micke · 13/11/2018 19:49

If you do it with a mars bar it’s very nice on ice cream.

zzzzz, you should share recipes with my MIL - I once wandered into the kitchen to find her eating a milky-way spread with clotted cream.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 13/11/2018 19:53

(But for the love of god WHAT is that bear made of?shock)

Ground up hooves, nostrils, bumbles and gristle. (Plus food colouring)

All the nourishing bits that the Empire was built on (possibly literally)

SchadenfreudePersonified · 13/11/2018 19:55

Only if it's stoneground wholemeal based (pizza) with a quinoa and kale topping

Is there any other type

Micke · 13/11/2018 19:58

To be fair, as a child, pork luncheon meat was a standard sandwich filling(I would have given anything for it to have a bear in it).

Then I moved to Italy, and was shocked to discover that Mortadella is basically the same thing, but considered adult food.

Trills · 13/11/2018 20:00

Billy bear is a real treat.

Or was in 1993 anyway.

AGnu · 13/11/2018 20:01

I've got a cake trick that blows people's minds...
To cut up a round, or any remotely symmetrical shaped, cake: slice it in half then proceed to cut slices parallel with the first cut, instead of cutting wedges. This means that not only does everyone get an easy to eat shape but those who like lots of icing can have edge pieces & those who don't get the middle bits. Once you're done slicing, push the 2 remaining sides into the middle so they're pressed against each other & stops the cake drying out.

TheMythicalChicken · 13/11/2018 20:05

I blew my DS’s mind yesterday. We were out for the day and I bought some chewing gum and blew a bubble with it. He had NEVER SEEN BUBBLE GUM BEFORE!!! He is 13.

We then picked up DD by which time DS had mastered the art of blowing bubbles with gum. DD then asked DS why he had a balloon in his mouth. She’s never seen it either!

SusanWalker · 13/11/2018 20:08

I cut my apples like that so you have a square core. I cut peppers like that too. No arsing around with seeds.

Cheese triangles are for melting into mushrooms, onions and garlic to go with pasta.

Billy bear is a real treat.

Or was in 1993 anyway.

I'm actually amazed that it still exists!

choccyp1g · 13/11/2018 20:10

ifnotnowthenwoohoo

My method of eating cream slices is to flip them half over, so there is icing on one side and thick base pastry on the other, then slice them with a serrated knife into little mini versions which fit into my mouth in one bite.

DS' method is to put the WHOLE THING into his mouth in one bite.

choccyp1g · 13/11/2018 20:12

My other time saving trick for sponge cake making is to make the buttercream first, then use the same bowl to mix the cake.
Saves a bit on washing up.

MulticolourMophead · 13/11/2018 20:24

My youngest is 15, and I've been cutting odd shaped meat into shapes to fit the bread for years.

I don't bother with the elastic band on an apple thing. I keep a tiny sharp knife in my drawer at work and cut my apple up as I eat. I always cut my apples, ever since I found out the hard way as a kid that finding half a maggot in an apple isn't remotely funny.

ilovepixie · 13/11/2018 20:40

I want cake now.
