Totally boring domestic tip I’d like to share!

Ds had rugby today and has one of those two colour rugby shirts which have a great big white stripe right across the middle. He was FILTHY, had clearly been rolling around in the mud. I remembered a lovely colleague of mine once telling me that washing up liquid (normal, bog standard fairy liquid) would get it clean. So slightly dubious, I rubbed a load of fairy into the really muddy bits, gave it a bit of a scrub and a five minute soak and then whacked it into the washing machine on a normal 40 degree hour long wash with washing powder. It has come out PRISTINE. DH wasn’t all that interested so I wanted to tell SOMEONE Grin

Well I'm interested! Luckily DS's kit is a dark green, but I'm storing that tip for future reference.

sizzledrizz · 12/11/2018 20:32

Yes! I regularly do this

TwittleBee · 12/11/2018 20:33

Oh yeah the washing up liquid was a game changer when someone on MN suggested I try it! Just be careful how much washing up liquid you use though as too much on the clothes can make your washing machine bubble overload like crazy 😂🙈

Teacherlikemisstrunchball · 12/11/2018 20:35

Hahaha I broke our last washing machine by overloading it, so I think I’d have been in trouble if I’d have flooded the kitchen with bubbles 😂

To flip your tip over, use vanish laundry powder to soak pans and oven dishes. Brings them up a treat.

Ooh that reminds me that my mum used to use biological washing powder to soak pans and stuff!

Soya sauce is brilliant for getting red wine stains off white shirts.

AnneWiddecombesHandbag · 12/11/2018 20:45

Yes!!!! I always use washing up liquid as a stain remover! It's so good!!!

TroysMammy · 12/11/2018 20:47

I use a spot of fairy liquid on any stains before putting them in the washing machine. Best on oil splatters from the stove.

yellowplumpreserves · 12/11/2018 20:52

Yes, I discovered that sort of by accident. Also works for blood. And a combo of fairy liquids d and direct sunlight is great for those hard to shift tomato stains.

formerbabe · 12/11/2018 20:58

I had a similar amazing discovery last week. I had eyeliner stains on my bedroom carpet...tried everything to get them out...make up remover, stain remover, carpet cleaner etc. Then I decided to try some plain bar soap and they stains disappeared...I was completely amazed. Sometimes the simplest products are the best!

Time40 · 12/11/2018 21:05

Washing up liquid is good, but the very best thing for this job was the hard green Fairy household soap. I was furious when it was discontinued.

gingajewel · 12/11/2018 21:08

Once I got grease on my top and a friend told me to put washing up liquid on it and it worked! I was amazed!

Effic · 12/11/2018 21:18

It also sorts cricket whites with grass stains - no more scrubbing! Just massage in, leave for 20 mins and into washing machine! Magic Smile

ReverseTheFerret · 12/11/2018 21:22

I do washing up liquid, a tiny bit of water, and some vanish powder into a paste rubbed into things like school paint and felt pen stains before bunging it in the wash - it gets most things out... apart from the lie that is "washable whiteboard pen" - nothing gets that out. You COULD chisel tablets of stone with writings you want preserved for centuries for future generations... or you could just use the equally indelible method of a Berol whiteboard pen and school polo shirt.

BoringSoup · 12/11/2018 21:26

White distilled vinegar used instead of rinse aid in your dishwasher brings up your glassware and cutlery beautifully.

Must try the washing up liquid, and I remember the hard green fairy soap well. It smelt nice as well.

bookaspaday · 12/11/2018 21:28

How do you get white school polo shirts white again, anyone?

LtGreggs · 12/11/2018 21:29

We have both the white rugby shirt and cricket white issues. Have just put fairy on top of washing machine to remind me! Thank you.

mrsmayitstimetogo · 12/11/2018 21:30

my favourite new tip is to pour boiling water through fruit stains on clothes - they just vanish! it's amazing!

LloydColeandtheCoconuts · 12/11/2018 21:31

Am I the only one who wants to know how formerbabe got eyeliner on the carpet? Wink

AgathaRaisinDetra · 12/11/2018 21:35

The best way to get rid of chewing gum on clothes is to put the item in the freezer and then forget about it until MIl wants some ice for her G&T.

PersisFord · 12/11/2018 21:37

Yes the boiling water fruit! It’s spectacular!

I would like to know a) how to get chocolate ice cream out of a white polo b) how to rewhiten greying polos and c) WHY THE PRIMARY SCHOOL POLOS HAVE TO BE WHITE IN THE FIRST PLACE?!?!

Shirleyphallus · 12/11/2018 21:41

Think it’s a bit of a cheek that he isn’t interested in his own rugby shirts - why doesn’t he wash them?!

niska · 12/11/2018 21:41

How do you combine Fairy Liquid and sunlight to remove stains please? Rub in Fairy, leave, wash, hang out - or omit the wash?
