Totally boring domestic tip I’d like to share!

Ds had rugby today and has one of those two colour rugby shirts which have a great big white stripe right across the middle. He was FILTHY, had clearly been rolling around in the mud. I remembered a lovely colleague of mine once telling me that washing up liquid (normal, bog standard fairy liquid) would get it clean. So slightly dubious, I rubbed a load of fairy into the really muddy bits, gave it a bit of a scrub and a five minute soak and then whacked it into the washing machine on a normal 40 degree hour long wash with washing powder. It has come out PRISTINE. DH wasn’t all that interested so I wanted to tell SOMEONE Grin

For really smelly armpits (thanks dear teens) soak stain in cold water and rub from the inside with Dettol anti bacterial bar soap. Then wash as normal at 40, or 60 if the garment can take it.

A580Hojas thats exactly the tip I've been looking for. Thanks.

As a teacher l would hardly get away with having vodka in the classroom just in case l got a whiteboard marker stain..
or would I???

peridito · 13/11/2018 09:09

@Time40 or this

www.amazon.co.uk/Pearl-Hand-Soap-Laundry-500/dp/B00J0JKPI4/ref=sr_1_17_a_it?keywords=fairy+laundry+soap+bar&tag=mumsnetforum-21&ie=UTF8&qid=1542099332&sr=8-17

RB who make it also make the Dettol bar soap mentioned above .

@niska, you wash (using fairy liquid or similar for the stain) then hang outside to dry in direct sunlight. Even if there is residual stain it will often be gone by the time the clothes are dry.

Keep it in a little bottle marked whiteboard cleaner.

Hairspray is magic for getting biro stains out.
Never use the stuff but found a nice little mini Elnett in Boots..

Antibacterial hand gel gets marker pen off white boards.

Cheaper than vodka.

JellySlice · 14/11/2018 16:18

The original tip was surgical spirit to remove whiteboard marker, followed by washing up liquid to remove the oil stain that the surgical spirit leaves behind. I decided to cut out the oil and just use neat alcohol. The cheapest and least unpleasant source of alcohol is vodka. (Asda's cheapest, not the Grey Goose!) White spirit or meths would probably work just as well, but the fumes would be more unpleasant.

JellySlice · 14/11/2018 16:20

BTW the only use for vodka in the classroom is to neck it when the little horrors darlings have gone to break. It's a pre-wash treatment, not an instant solution unless you neck it.

MotherWilliam · 14/11/2018 17:12

Vodka is also useful for soaking your rings in - brings them up nice and sparkling.

Extra virgin olive oil will fetch out the terrible black grease that HGVs shed. Soak it in for 30 minutes, then wash at 40.
