Totally boring domestic tip I’d like to share!

Ds had rugby today and has one of those two colour rugby shirts which have a great big white stripe right across the middle. He was FILTHY, had clearly been rolling around in the mud. I remembered a lovely colleague of mine once telling me that washing up liquid (normal, bog standard fairy liquid) would get it clean. So slightly dubious, I rubbed a load of fairy into the really muddy bits, gave it a bit of a scrub and a five minute soak and then whacked it into the washing machine on a normal 40 degree hour long wash with washing powder. It has come out PRISTINE. DH wasn’t all that interested so I wanted to tell SOMEONE Grin

Sorry that's a Q for @yellowplumpreserves!

Teacherlikemisstrunchball · 12/11/2018 21:46

Think it’s a bit of a cheek that he isn’t interested in his own rugby shirts - why doesn’t he wash them?!

They’re not DH’s shirts, they’re DS’s - and he’s only 6, so am still working on getting him to do his own washing Grin

Saving that tip for the future! Thanks :)

BikeRunSki · 12/11/2018 21:50

Washing up liquid is excellent for getting bike chain oil out of clothes too.

Shirleyphallus · 12/11/2018 21:50

Grin Grin Grin

Apologies OP, just read the “dh isn’t interested” bit. Wrist sufficiently slapped!

VisitorsEntrance · 12/11/2018 21:51

I shall remember the washing up liquid tip for the future. I tend to use stain devil on most stuff.

The best tip I picked up on here was Napisan. White things are now white again!

formerbabe · 12/11/2018 21:52

@LloydColeandtheCoconuts

Am I the only one who wants to know how formerbabe got eyeliner on the carpet?

Oh I wish I had an exciting story about this but no, I sharpened my eyeliner pencil and the shavings fell on the carpet and I trod them in before realising!

Horsemad · 12/11/2018 21:54

Used to do this with DS's WHITE?! Hmm footy shorts, worked a treat. Used an old toothbrush to scrub them clean...

BikeRunSki · 12/11/2018 21:56

Soya sauce is brilliant for getting red wine stains off white shirts. how do you do this @AgathaRaidinDetra?

niska. Rub in washing up liquid, wash as normal, hang to dry in sunshine.

cariadlet · 12/11/2018 21:56

Do any of you cleaning wizards know how to get pasta sauce stains out of white school shirts? Would washing up liquid work on those?

Hippee · 12/11/2018 21:59

You can get Sharpie off non-acrylic carpets by ironing a babywipe over the stain and then rubbing it with the wipe - it goes all rubbery and comes off in bits.

BikeRunSki · 12/11/2018 21:59

@PersisFord - soak inbleach or Napisan

White shirts (and baby grows), can be bleached white again (except for bananas and white board pens), can’t do this coloured shirts.

thehorseandhisboy · 12/11/2018 22:01

Worth a go, although use cold water as hot 'sets' the stain.

Sunlight is the best thing for bleaching whites - hang it in the sunniest window that you have after washing it with washing up liquid.

Likely story, that's what they all say Wink

princesstiasmum · 12/11/2018 22:08

Anyone got a tip for getting a bra white again which turned pale blue after accidentally putting in with coloureds?
Its not cotton

Orlandointhewilderness · 12/11/2018 22:12

fairy liquid is also brill for getting the ends of white horse tails white...!

Squeakyheart · 12/11/2018 22:20

I got whiteboard pen out of a white polo by dowsing it in cheap hairspray before washing!

FunkyHeroCat · 12/11/2018 22:21

Acetone (nail varnish remover) gets henna stains off - but you have to be careful you don't put it on something that reacts with it (some plastics do) so try on a small patch first.

shadypines · 12/11/2018 22:38

Baby wipes are pretty good for things like muck on carpets. My DC are 19 and 17 but I still have baby wipes in the house, AND nappy sacks (ultra cheap ones) as they are so handy for picking up tortoise poop.

niska · 12/11/2018 23:32

Thanks, @BikeRunSki. Apparently cheap nappy sacks are good for dog poo, too?

AgathaRaisinDetra · 13/11/2018 06:44

Pour soy sauce over the red wine stain and leave to dry. Wash on hot the next day and bingo, red wine stain completely gone.

RavenLG · 13/11/2018 06:54

These aren’t laundry tips but I love these types of threads so thought I’d add my two cents.

Mould marks on silicone. Roll up some tissue / kitchen roll into little worm shaped tubes, soak in bleach then lay against the silicone. Leave overnight, wipe the next morning and silicone will be pristine.

Nail varnish on carpet. I discovered this when I spilled navy nail varnish on a cream carpet. Pour on some nail varnish remover, blot out as much as you can, then take some hair spray and spray pretty close to the area. It lifted it completely. There was a slightly crunchy area ate of the rug but when dry just gave it a bit of a scrub with a stiff bristled brush and it was like new.

JellySlice · 13/11/2018 07:02

@ReverseTheFerret, vodka shifts whiteboard pen marks. (Only fresh ones, though. Once they've been washed and set, you're right, nothing shifts them.)

Dab marks generously with vodka so that they're sodden and wash as normal before the vodka dries out.

Shockers · 13/11/2018 07:15

Or drink the vodka and you won’t care about the stain.

ReverseTheFerret · 13/11/2018 07:56

Waste of bloody good vodka really! Thankfully ours can wear red polo shirts so at least the worst of the stains are less obvious!
