Milk Bottle Tops Collected for Wheelchairs?

Is this real or an urban myth?
My local Facebook group is asking people to collect milk bottle tops for an appeal for a child in a local primary school who needs a wheelchair They are apparently going to be taken to the school.
Also, various other people have mentioned other charities who are collecting for wheelchairs.
I have googled to find out more info, but, I always thought this was a myth...and, googling just brings up a few articles about how many thousands of plastic tops it would take. One article about a lady who had collected several bin bags full, said that the cost of transporting them to Portsmouth to be recycled would be more than you'd get for them anyway.
I don't want to be a funsponge and ask on the Facebook group if I am wrong, and will gladly save them if I am.
Does anybody know if this is correct and the little local girl will get her wheelchair?

If it’s true can everyone send them to me so I can get a new wheelchair. I’m not greedy I’ll settle for a Kuschall K Champion in purple

Hahaha IcaMorgan!
My DS has a 'bone shaker' as he calls it, aka a bog standard NHS one and DD1's OT wants her to have a power chair but the NHS won't fund it as she can walk, just not for long.
I suspect you'd need skip fulls for a decent wheelchair Wink

I was wondering about this too?

What's the value in bottle tops??

Samcro · 12/11/2018 07:38

in all my years in the sn world(and all dd's peers and her use wheelchairs) I have never heard of this. there are charities like whizz kids that help fund wheelchairs.

Sounds very similar to this www.snopes.com/fact-check/keeping-tabs/ which sadly isn’t true.

When I was a kid in primary school in the 80s, we collected milk bottle tops for the Guide Dogs.

Thanks for all the replies....now I need to work out how to/if I should say anything to the group about this being a myth without offending anyone...
