What is this inside my chicken?!

Just cooked a whole chicken, looked totally normal and fine but I’ve cut through the breast now carving it up and sliced right through this... it’s yellow/green, seems full of “bits” and has a sort of thick membrane around it. Envy

No idea. Takeaway tonight?

formerbabe · 11/11/2018 18:27

No idea but I'd get a takeaway if I was you!

AssassinatedBeauty · 11/11/2018 18:27

Probably some sort of growth or tumour that the chicken had.

Ha ha, cross post!

It's the crop. Part of the gut very high up near the neck, where grains sit while the chicken is feeding. It's fine. Cut it out and the rest of the bird is absolutely ok to eat.

FearOfFrogs · 11/11/2018 18:28

possibly the crop.

oopslateagain · 11/11/2018 18:28

Look closer, you'll probably see whole kernels of corn and grains.

formerbabe · 11/11/2018 18:28

That photo might just be the thing that finally tips me over into veganism.

JaneJeffer · 11/11/2018 18:29

I don't know but I wish I hadn't seen it as I've just eaten some roast chicken . Also Envy

EradicatetheDoubt · 11/11/2018 18:29

Its fine. Morrisons did refund me once, but told me it was normal.

MarthaHanson · 11/11/2018 18:29

Oh God OP, that’s my nightmare.

bringbackthestripes · 11/11/2018 18:30

The craw (crop)

Maelstrop · 11/11/2018 18:31

Yup, crop, it's been chopped too high (the head) and left that bit behind. I always chop as low as I can to avoid all the grain falling out of the pigeons and pheasants I get given. Bit icky.

JaneJeffer · 11/11/2018 18:32

I remember buying chicken breasts that had lots of grain stuck behind them. Very off-putting

ApollO88 · 11/11/2018 18:35

I work for a poultry producer. Take your packaging back into store you bought it from with a photo or the actual chicken. They will refund you and send in the complaint details to the manufacturer. The packing is important for tracing back through the system

Flower777 · 11/11/2018 18:39

That’s kind of gross and sad at the same time 😔

WinterSpiceOnIce · 11/11/2018 18:41

Been thinking of going back to being vegetarian

Think my mind is now made up!

Afternooninthepark · 11/11/2018 18:46

This is the sort of thing which makes me wonder why I started eating meat again after being a vegetarian for 15 years. I once found a worm in my McDonald’s fillet o fish, never eaten one since 🤢

Londonbum · 11/11/2018 18:50

Omg. There ARE definitely seeds and grains in there. It must be the crop! Thank you so much. I know this might be horrifying but we are all now eating it!

So glad I'm vegetarian blehh

RubyLux · 11/11/2018 18:59

Jesus me too.

Todayissunny · 11/11/2018 18:59

I'm not vegetarian but this has reminded me of why i don't eat chicken.....
Lots of gravy with it OP.

catsmother · 11/11/2018 19:08

Wow, I've never seen this in a shop bought chicken but see it frequently with the pigeons and partridges my cats bring in on a regular basis. For a long time, amongst all the blood, gore and feathers, I couldn't work out why there were also berries strewn across my kitchen floor!

Bluntness100 · 11/11/2018 19:11

I love chicken but that's made me feel quite nauseous, 😔😔😔
