Any tonsillitis experts around?

DS10 has tonsillitis. On day 4 of amoxicillin but his tonsils are still massive and he still feels rubbish.

I have had tonsillitis myself several times and ime antibiotics usually kick in after 24 hours and I will feel better from then on.

He has already missed a week of school and I don’t want him to miss any more but equally he still isn’t right.

Any thoughts or experience of this?

The tonsils are swollen because they are fighting the infection. Get him to gargle with lukewarm salty water.

Flower777 · 11/11/2018 17:50

In the summer we had a different antibiotic that did work. A disgusting one.

I will get him to gargle thank you.

He had a swab test in the summer and it wasn’t strep. I’m assuming it’s simil although they didn’t check this time.

Our DC both suffer frequently with tonsillitis and our GP's rule is that if by day 4 of antibiotics they're no better, take them back for another checkup. 3 days is the longest it's taken either of them to recover enough to return to school.

Your poor DS. Tonsillitis is really horrible. My daughter used to suffer with it a lot and still gets it a couple of times a year now. I also used to get it a lot until I had my tonsils removed.

I'm not sure than amoxicillin is the best antibiotic though. The last couple of times my daughter has had it, she's been given a different one as the doctor said they found amoxicillin wasn't being effective. I think it was something beginning with 'c'. Sorry I can't remember.

Has your son improved at all ? Any less pain? I think I would take your son back if he's showing no sign of improvement in the next 24 hours as he may need a different antibiotic. It may be caused by a virus in which case this would explain the antibiotics not working, although I would still have thought he would be improving by now.

Hope he's better soon, having tonsillitis is really miserable.

NotAQueef · 11/11/2018 17:53

Yes when my daughter had tonsillitis in the summer she was prescribed the foul medicine Phenoxymethylpenicillin which she kept vomiting. Doctor said she couldn’t prescribe amoxicillin (banana flavored liquid)
It could be that he need a different antibiotic. I would call the dr tomorrow

ciaobella88 · 11/11/2018 17:53

Sounds viral, unlikely to be strep if not very visible whiteness all over the tonsils. Lots of fluids and painkillers; what a shame nothing worse

Snowscreen · 11/11/2018 17:54

Im on Clarithromycin for reacurring throat infections. I felt a million times better after 36 hours. (I've had glanduar fever & get ill so quickly)

Clarithromycin -
(Biaxin, Biaxin XL) is an antibiotic drug prescribed for the treatment of a large variety of bacterium. Clarithromycin is used to treat infections of the middle ear, tonsils, throat, larynx, bronchioles, lungs, and skin.

Dd has just recovered from awful tonsillitis, she was in a very bad way, pus on her tonsils, swollen etc urgh!

First doctor gave her penicillin but it made no difference. She was then give Clarithromycin liquid. It tastes completely horrible but thankfully worked. She was off college most of last week though and could barely get out of bedSad

I would go def back to the GP tomorrow OP. Huge sympathy. Hope he gets better soon. I also dislike keeping them home but there wasn’t much option 😷

Heismyopendoor · 11/11/2018 17:57

Dd has has tonsillitis a million times. Yes slight exaggeration lol, she’s due to get hers out this month!! Woo hoo!

But anyway, dd normally feels better after 24-48 hours on antibiotics. I don’t know what one she usually gets though, sometimes it’s the yellow one (disgusting) and sometimes the orange one (also disgusting). Seems to vary on the doctor that prescribed it.

I would call the doctors tomorrow and go in for a once over. May need to try different antibiotics, did they do a swab when he got seen?

Flashingbeacon · 11/11/2018 17:59

Back to the gp, may be viral though It’s really grim.
Make sure he’s taking the maximum painkillers he can and drinking little and often.
I found that slightly warm drinks were better than cold drink.
Definitely kept of school though, tonsillitis is the worst for clamming down only to flare back up at a moments notice.
Ds had his tonsils out this summer and we just realised we’re completely over stocked with calpol and tissues because we kept on buying it at last year’s rate.

Flower777 · 11/11/2018 18:04

Thanks so much everyone.

There are some white bits on his tonsils but it’s not too bad. Mine have certainly been very white before.

Bizarrely his throat doesn’t actually seem to hurt which is odd. He does have some sensory issues though so it’s not always easy to tell with him.

I think we will go back to the doctors tomorrow.

Thanks again all.

Dd was also gargling with Disprin in tepid water. She said it helped a lot. But she’s 17 - I’m not sure whether it’s it’s ok for younger ones.

TwistinMyMelon · 11/11/2018 19:44

Could be glandular fever

spanishwife · 11/11/2018 19:50

My two killer tactics were:

  • Gargle with anti bacterial mouthwash as soon as you start to feel it plus all the way throughout
-Completely reduce or cut out dairy if you can as it produces a lot of extra mucus and makes it worse
  • eat a lot of crunchy food (toast, crisps), helps scrape it all down, always makes it hurt less for me
spanishwife · 11/11/2018 20:07

Oops that was 3
