saganorenscarandcoat · 10/11/2018 16:09

Following on from the modern dining trends that annoy you what general modern stuff annoys you?

Mine are:

People taking selfies in toilets

Being asked for my email address at a till

Wasteful plastic tat in the shops

OP posts:
tomhazard · 12/11/2018 13:37

Elf on the shelf
The massiveness of Halloween. Right on top of fireworks and Christmas I just feel overwhelmed by consumerism.
Hashtags.

sashh · 12/11/2018 13:44

Proseco, we had champagne and cava both really nice so why is proseco all over the place?

LonelyandTiredandLow · 12/11/2018 13:46

Sorry (am listening to R4 and getting my knickers in a twist) ! Just heard a man who has a company who do AI microchips for humans - you can wave your hand to open the door to the office, store data for your bank accounts, shopping data, etc! He said there was no downside they could think of! Imagine being mugged! He even compared it to how we tag our pets! Shock
That's not even thinking about the abuses by big business timing loo breaks and worse for insurance payouts. I get that it's his company and he's trying to sell it, but he said people are voluntarily getting mico-chips put into their hands Shock It's frankly moronic!
People literally won't open doors by themselves as a pp said up-thread.

FishCanFly · 12/11/2018 13:48

people making stupid videos of their young children which go viral, i.e. children doing something stupid. Well, no wonder children are stupid when parents are twats.

spanishwife · 12/11/2018 13:50

Prosecco is Italian, Cava is Spanish, Champagne is French... it's not a trend, it's just cheaper and sweeter so has become popular

Talith · 12/11/2018 13:53

Being asked every time at the till if I want a co-op card even though I shop there every day and the answer has been no for the last five years.

WhirlyGigWhirlyGig · 12/11/2018 13:54

The more I read this thread the better I feel, so many people who get irritated by the same things as me.

DameSquashalot · 12/11/2018 13:56

I quite like the individual false eyelashes. (I've only with en them once). The big brushes are awful though. I really hate them.

FishCanFly · 12/11/2018 14:22

also shaving heads "for charity" because how else would you explain indulging yourself with a 'rebellious' haircut. Other things I could add - going for walks, running a marathon, having a tea party. all screams "me, me, me"

missmouse101 · 12/11/2018 14:23

Being asked by all and sundry if they can call me by my first name. No, I don't actually know you. Just use Miss and my surname please.

SparklesAndUnicorns · 12/11/2018 14:28

Can I also add, bodyshop/Avon/younique etc etc Facebook groups, if I wanted any of that I would just go into a shop I don't need you messaging me and adding me to your pointless group and telling me how amazing that crappy hand cream is, and when you try to leave the group they just re add you and ask to if you want them to host a party at your house for all their shitty products. No thank you.

spanishwife · 12/11/2018 14:30

Talith sounds like you should probably get one and start saving some points!

FixItUpChappie · 12/11/2018 14:53

That sensitivity seems so rampant these days. Offending anyone is seen as a crime.

I was at a staff meeting the other day and management was banging on about changing the golden rule to " don't treat others how you want to be treated, treat others how they want to be treated". If my eyeballs rolled any farther into my head they would have gotten stuck.

It all seems very controlling, narcissistic and trendy. Especially around gender.

limpbizkit · 12/11/2018 15:03

Also 'raising awareness' of issues that we're not only 'aware' of but had rammed down our throats and we're all choking on!

limpbizkit · 12/11/2018 15:12

That's no disrespect for the Conditions etc that they're referring to but more the ignorance that comes with thinking we're not 'aware' just the saying 'raising awareness' is a cliché that's overused

mrswhiplington · 12/11/2018 15:18

The trend for saying super in front of everything. "She is super nice". "That was super tasty". No need for it.

Cautionsharpblade · 12/11/2018 16:01

Vocal fry

ohnonotyetplease · 12/11/2018 16:07
  • being precious about very minor things and expecting widespread sympathy...
  • general usage of poor English IE "can I get?.." ...I think you meant "may I have."
  • the constant, demoralising, omnipresent social media comparing game that's almost impossible to avoid.
  • use of "I know, right" and "y'all" etc, ad nauseum, by people who aren't from the US. (mild intolerance there I admit!)
StoatofDisarray · 12/11/2018 16:07

@Cautionsharpblade Vocal what?!

mostdays · 12/11/2018 16:20

Lavish Easter boxes and Christmas Eve boxes, and not doing them meaning you are a mean, tight, joyless excuse for a parent.

Being told that it's not enough to respect someone's right to have a different view, you must also respect the view they hold.

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 12/11/2018 16:22

Stoat basically women putting on a voice with the ‘valley girl’ California inflection.

Look up Kim Kardashian as an example!

AlmostGrockle · 12/11/2018 16:24

Cyclists who think they own the pavement.

meddie · 12/11/2018 16:26

People who insist on everything they do being 'sponsored for charity'. your hobby is running Dave. Stop bombarding us with sponsorship forms for every race you enter.
Ditto raising money for charity by paying for you to have 'the experience of a lifetime, or your teenager to go and build a school somewhere. That money would be better spent paying local people to build it thereby giving them employment and helping the local economy. Not funding your over indulged teen for a 3 week jolly to take selfies of themselves 'doing charity'

Thesnobbymiddleclassone · 12/11/2018 16:50

Where to begin...

People who check in at hospitals and are like "sorry hun can't say" or "I'll pm you". Just attention seeking.

Everyday commentary of your activities on Facebook. Example "off to do the shop" then followed by "finally home from the shop".

Bump photos, especially those who post one everyday.

Drawn on eyebrows. Surely it's less effort to just have real ones.

goingonabearhunt1 · 12/11/2018 17:12

Alot of things mentioned don't bother me: I don't mind SM, hashtags, phones or anything like that. Don't get selfies, contouring, big eyebrows, whatever but don't care if that's what people want to do.

However, not a big fan of all this craft ale that has weird flavours in it, I just like normal beer, don't want my beer to taste of chrysanthemums or whatever Grin Kind of fed up of salted caramel and pumpkin spice everything, think it's a bit overdone. What else? It's really hard to buy a top that's not cropped or see through or has bits cut out of the sides it seems which isn't great for anyone not 14.

Oh and all the pp saying about being asked for email at the till; just say no and ask for just the paper receipt, they can't force you to hand over email contact details (that's what I do and it works fine).
