Horrible streaming cold. Luckily i am able to languish in bed and DP is looking after me.

So far i am feeding it - cake , soup, buiscuits. Lemon and ginger tea - not great, appears it has to be the real thing but i was lazy and bought tea bags.

Have taken lemsip which i normally avoid but i wanted to clear my head.

What are your go tos? Be it conventional, herbal or woo

I’m suffering too! Horrible cold. I’m afraid my go to is lemsip - nothing quite clears my head like it. I’ve also got throat spray to numb my sore throat. I’m being totally useless on the sofa today.

I read about putting Vicks Vaporub on soles of feet, with warm socks. I had a rotten head cold earlier this week, and normally my blocked nose would keep me awake, but I think the Vicks trick helped. Just have a small/occasional cough now, but my head is clear.

Sinead100 · 10/11/2018 14:11

Can I join the pity party too? Any food/herbal remedies would be especially appreciated as I am unable to take any paracetamol/ibuprofen due to medication over use. Am in bed with Ginger tea.

OP, try adding a quarter tsp of turmeric to your lemon ginger tea. Its anti inflammatory and might help heal you inside!

sproutsandparsnips · 10/11/2018 14:12

Sudafed (the pseudoephedrine one) you can only get in in pharmacies. Plus 2 paracetamol.

HeronLanyon · 10/11/2018 14:12

Ginger. Lemon. Chill. Red onions. Cinnamon. Turmeric. Honey. Lemsip. Vick steam treatment. Best throat things I’ve found are difflam (gargle) and strefen (lozenges). These last two are behind counter but not prescription only. Currently on sofa watching awful tv. In that period wondering if my awful cold is turning into bronchitis or not. Also doing small domestic jobs put off for months and listening to audio books. In many ways enjoying this enforced laziness. Hope you feel better soon all.

HoosierDaddy · 10/11/2018 14:14

Sinead - DH swears by a hot whiskey before bed, and sweat it out, as an alternative to Lemsip, but I can't stomach them.

Hot Ribena is soothing too

LEMtheoriginal · 10/11/2018 14:15

Might help if the lemsip wasn't two mobths out of date Hmm

Day nurse and night nurse capsules not the liquid is far superior to Lemsip etc IMHO.

Vicks vapour rub, olbas inhaler sticks and hot cordial with honey and whisky last thing at night. It just works.

Lucylugs · 10/11/2018 14:17

Ginger and turmeric tea with manuka honey and lemon juice added. I find it's better than lemsip as it can be taken as often as you like. Lots and lots of fluids and stay as warm as possible to sweat it out. I agree with spicy foods too. I eat mustard on toast and halapinos to clear a sore throat. Tot of brandy in the evening if I haven't taken other medication. Orange juice is great as it help with mucus and dryness in throat plus added vit. C. Hope you feel better soon.

Sinead100 · 10/11/2018 14:18

@HoosierDaddy Thank you for that

@LEMtheoriginal Previously, Night Nurse (liquid) always helped me get to and stay asleep. That might help later tonight.

silkpyjamasallday · 10/11/2018 14:24

Grated fresh ginger in a hot bath always helps me with aches and pains during s cold, be warned though it makes you sweat like a waterfall all over!

TheExamStartsNow · 10/11/2018 14:38

Another cold sufferer here Sad

You know the saying 'starve a fever, feed a cold'? Is there any science behind that, as I'm CONSTANTLY starving hungry and craving carbs, but don't want to sabotage my diet efforts... unless it's like a legitimate medical order and my only chance of recovery ...

TheExamStartsNow · 10/11/2018 14:40

My tip: I'm constantly sipping hot miso soup with some wasabi in. That is staving off the hunger as well as warming me up and clearing my nasal passages.

LEMtheoriginal · 10/11/2018 14:50

Wonders if DP will do a mercy run to tesco. So far i need

-manuka honey

  • miso soup
  • wasabi
  • tumeric
  • day/night nurse
  • lemons
  • oranges
  • MAN size tissues
