How difficult is it to change email address?

I've had the same "main" email address for about 20 years. in recent years I've acquired a gmail address too, and I'd like to now use that one as my main. Is it a hassle to do?
I'm not very techy, so if someone could please explain as if speaking to a small child, I'd be very grateful!

What is your ‘other’ email address e.g. yahoo etc? Because you can link them to get all the emails to your old address to come through to your gmail account.

In other practical terms, you need to inform people of your new address - email your contacts to say please use this gmail address, and update any account details that use it (banks, mailing lists you want etc)

Log into your Gmail account. Click the cog wheel icon (top left) and select 'Settings'. Select the 'Accounts and Import' tab. Scroll down to 'Check mail from other accounts' and select 'Add email address'. You'll be prompted to enter your btinternet email address and password. Once confirmed, emails addressed to your btinternet address will show in Gmail.

Then you can either keep the btinternet one permanently, or tell people over time of your new Gmail one.

Flag emails coming in from your btinternet account (using a rule or just go through them manually) and update mailing lists/newsletters and people as necessary/wanted.
