80s ethereal sounding band

Just heard a clip of a band on a film (Modern Life is Rubbish, bit of a crap film) and I can't remember who they are. An ex gave me a copied CD of theirs years ago and I loved it and want to listen to them again (goodness knows if I kept the cd).

They were all waily echoey voices, jangly guitars and incomprehensible lyrics. The woman's voice kept breaking in a slightly yodelly way. I want to say the Pixies although obviously not them. Possibly Scottish although maybe it's just because my ex was Scottish.

Help me out here!

Clannad?

Irish (I think) and suitably ethereal

RoseAndRose · 09/11/2018 22:20

Sorry - slow typing meant x-post

DuggeesWooOOooggle · 09/11/2018 22:21

And snipsnip thank you too. I thought my description wouldn't really narrow it down but you got it straight away.

Bonkers but great, makes me remember being a bit in love and horizons opening up.

Ah Clannad and Enya would both also fit that bill, Rose. Not enough bands like this now. Or maybe there are. I just don't really listen to music any more and wouldn't know where to start.

I'm only 37 FFS!

This is the list of the songs in the film www.soundtrack.net/movie/modern-life-is-rubbish/

Is it this one m.youtube.com/watch?v=0d-lttbObeU

Funny, Cocteau Twins would have been my next guess!

DuggeesWooOOooggle · 09/11/2018 22:25

I now have to listen through the Cocteau's entire back catalogue to find the song I remember most from ex's album. Will post here when I find it!!

Just been showing it to my 6 year old who thinks it's Miley Cyrus 😂🤣😀

Petalflowers · 09/11/2018 22:26

Even though I was a teen during the 80s, I would never have got your band. However, love the word ‘ethereal’ in your title.

DuggeesWooOOooggle · 09/11/2018 22:27

That's the one Dodie. Beautiful sound and totally unique. To someone who discovered them way after the 80s it just sounds so timeless.

Right that's what I will be doing this weekend! Grin

Heaven or Las Vegas. One of the best albums ever.

Penny1976 · 09/11/2018 22:29
this is one of my favourite ones.
FabulousTomatoes · 09/11/2018 22:31

My first thought was Cocteau Twins but I was beaten to it! Check out their Treasure album - the best IMO. Also Cherry Coloured Funk which is on the same album as Heaven or Las Vegas 😍

DuggeesWooOOooggle · 09/11/2018 22:34

Treasure! That was the name of the album, I'm sure of it! Off to bed now but will be looking it up tomorrow definitely.

God I love Mumsnet Grin

Haven't RTFT but was it Gareth Gates?

pearlydewdropsdrops · 09/11/2018 22:42

Listen to The Pink Opaque, OP!
Treasure is also fabulous.

Me and DH got together over our shared love of the Cocteau Twins!

m.youtube.com/watch?v=7Jtejnvza2U this is another amazing track with Liz Fraser singing - anyone remember this song?

AlecTrevelyan006 · 09/11/2018 22:57

If you're feeling some early festive love
Cocteau Twins - Winter Wonderland

Rodders92 · 09/11/2018 22:57

Iceblink luck , haven’t heard that in years I love the album but that was my favourite track

DuggeesWooOOooggle · 11/11/2018 17:13

Well what a great weekend I have had, listening to lots of Cocteau Twins. Ivo was the one I remember most - first on the album and with the slightest echoes of the Dogtantian and the Muskerhounds theme tune.

Mad as a box of frogs but brilliant too.
