Tailgated by boy racer....then....karma?

Tonight I was driving home from work and was severely tail gated by an idiot in a fiesta. We are talking bending country roads with blind corners and tight bends. This guy was so close that I was scared he was going to hit me. I couldn't pull over at any point as there was no safe place for overtaking anyway. Eventually we come to a stretch and I let him past.
A few minutes later I see hazard lights up ahead. The idiot had tried to overtake on a blind corner and had to swerve out of the way of a poor lady who was shaking like a leaf. Boy racer idiot was 30ft into a field with the entire back end of his car off. He wasn't badly hurt.
Is it wrong that I was slightly smug that he came to such an accident. He could have killed someone so I can only hope he is off the road for some time.

My family were nearly killed by a twat of a driver who thought he was invincible. Instead they were left with life changing injuries (he died). If one shit driver learns their lesson via an incident that shakes them up but leaves everyone unharmed then I would be celebrating.

Queenbean · 09/11/2018 22:46

Turns out car in front was actually a unmarked police car and when he went over the limit they turned there lights on.

One of the best moments of my life.

If that was one of the best moments of your life you need to, errrr, get a life mate

greathat · 09/11/2018 22:47

Good that it was an accident where no one was hurt. Hopefully he's learned a lesson. Shame the old lady was traumatised though :(. Hope she's ok

SoupDragon · 09/11/2018 22:49

why the fuck are you not in the left hand lane if it’s clear for you to pull in and you aren’t overtaking?

Maybe because she was travelling faster than the cars in the left lane?

SoupDragon · 09/11/2018 22:51

Yes, people are gloating.

No, that is an exaggeration. There's a huge difference between "serves you right" and gloating.

ShovingLeopard · 09/11/2018 22:52

Exactly, SoupDragon

LondonLassInTheCountry · 09/11/2018 22:53

We live in a village, there was a driver and every single day on his way to work, early in the morning, he would drive like an idiot. Over taking, sitting so close to other cars, speeding etc.

A couple of weeks ago, he killed a young lad who was driving a motorbike, he was just about to become a dad.

People really do make my blood boil

Veterinari · 09/11/2018 23:05

Then sge’d be overtaking Hmm that’s pretty much the definition of moving faster than the cars to your left. If there’s space to pull in then you pull in. If there are cars in the left lane and you’re travelling faster then you're Overtaking - you can’t pull in. Once the overtaking is done, you pull in - it shouldn't Take someone tailgating to encourage you to do so

Mickeysminnie2 · 09/11/2018 23:50

Perhaps she moved momentarily into the hard shoulder?

FloppyWollop · 10/11/2018 07:15

I'll never forget one really scorching hot day we drove to London to see friends. At a set of lights two motorcyclists pulled up behind us, wearing vest tops and shorts, I commented as I always do 'If they crash that helmet isn't going to save them'. When the lights changed they raced either side of us crossing over Infront of the car ahead, then continuing at ridiculous speed weaving in and out of traffic. Moments later we could see flashing lights and the traffic had come to a halt again so we hoped they'd been pulled over. As we were guided past I could see both men on the floor, one was already dead and the other had flesh hanging off everywhere, then amongst the carnage a big burly man by the side of the road being comforted by police absolutely sobbing his heart out. We found out later they hadn't paid attention to the lights and had driven straight onto the path of a builder's van. He had seen them at the last moment but couldn't swerve and then felt them under his wheels.

When you drive like a dick, it will catch up with you at some point. It can devastate the lives of so many innocent people when they witness these tragic situations. I don't understand why they still do it!

BrickByBrick · 10/11/2018 08:10

Mumsnet where the dangerous driver is always the innocent one and those simply driving along are always to blame.

In regards to the 'why didn't you move over on the dual carriageway' I am in that situation most days. I could move over (as in there is a gap) but this would generally involve significant slowing down and then being unable to get back over. I recently had a car nearly drive head on into me. In mn land it would have been my fault despite him being on the wrong side of the road as he came over the brow of a 'hill' (more change in road gradient then hill)

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 10/11/2018 08:17

He got what he deserves. The only saving grace is that he didn't injure or kill anyone else driving like a twat. Hopefully now he will think on.

Miscible · 10/11/2018 08:27

All of that, including the police turning up, happened within moments of the motorcyclists driving off, Floppy? The police in that area must be staggeringly efficient.

Clutterbugsmum · 10/11/2018 08:30

Exactly BrickByBrick. In the weird land of Mumsnet is becoming, only the people who are doing nothing wrong are guilty for being there, same are all rude and obnoxious have hidden MH issues.

itsbritneybiatches · 10/11/2018 08:43

If someone drives up my arse in a way that's dangerous and could cause me to have an accident that could change my life via injuries, same for anyone in the car with me, cause me to hit a pedestrian and so on and go on to do it again and again to other people in other scenarios, well. Sorry but my first thought is "selfish prick I hope they crash before they endanger someone"

You can guarantee that if someone is tailgating then it won't be the only dangerous thing they do when behind the wheel.

Selfish twats. Leave to drive properly and considerably or get off the fucking road.

I don't feel this way because their driving irritates me, I feel this way because it's dangerous to others. They knowingly drive dangerously. Cunts.

WowCrabby · 10/11/2018 09:03

I'm always shocked at how close some people drive in the motorway - it's so pointless and so dangerous.

FairfaxAikman · 10/11/2018 09:37

I live in a village which starts on a blind summit and continues on the "back" of the hill. The 20mph limit starts well before the summit as the summit is also a crossroads.

My DF runs the local police-backed civilian speed camera group and they once clocked someone entering the crossroads at 63mph.

IMO not enough people respect country roads. The back road into the village is very windy and for some reason a lot of people are guided along it by sat nav - I've lost count of the people tailgating me cos I'm doing 30mph. However the local farmer often drives his sheep up and down the road between fields, the sheep often escape their fields for better grazing on the verges and there's a load of horses about - it's not safe to go any faster but people just focus on the fact there's a NSL sign.

Rikalaily · 10/11/2018 09:46

We were cut up by someone driving like an idiot, weaving and speeding along Scotland Road in Liverpool heading towards Anfield... We got to lights outside the Football shop and there is was, turned onto it's roof.

tenorladybeaker · 10/11/2018 10:08

Excellent karma demo, thanks for sharing.

@Smsmeeesmeghhhehead do contact the local police force and let them know that while you didn't witness the accident, you did witness him driving dangerously a few minutes before the accident. If they are considering whether to prosecute this would be helpful. If he is trying to make out that the other driver was at fault for insurance purposes then your word will also be helpful.

SoupDragon · 10/11/2018 10:41

Then sge’d be overtaking hmm that’s pretty much the definition of moving faster than the cars to your left. If there’s space to pull in then you pull in.

🙄 You can be moving faster than the cars on the left and there still be a gap. It is not safe or sensible to keep dipping into the left lane for a few seconds. You have no idea whether pulling into the left lane required her to slow down just to let the twatty tailgater past.

And no, if there is space for you to pull in you don't necessarily pull in because if you are moving faster than the car in front you will have to pull out again very shortly, especially on very busy roads.

citiesofbismuth · 10/11/2018 10:47

Happened to me once. The boy racer ended up upside down on the dual carriageway. I didn't bother stopping. His equally bad boy racer friends in the other car could deal with it. A learning experience I thought.

citiesofbismuth · 10/11/2018 10:50

Oh, and a motorbike overtook us at great speed once and I even commented that he was suicidal. A few miles down the road, we encountered him, off his bike, lying near a poor dead sheep which he's collided with. Not a nice scene. I'm afraid my sympathy was with the sheep.

These people shouldn't be on the road at all.

Racecardriver · 10/11/2018 10:54

Well I think it’s a good thing. No one was hurt and hopefully he learned his lesson. In future you can flash your rear fog lights to ward off tailgaters, usually works.

LemonSqueezy0 · 10/11/2018 11:00

Hope this teaches him a lesson. Thank god he didn't hurt anyone else, which very easily could have been the case.

Its not gloating to think thank god only he was involved Hmm people like him cause accidents day in, day out. Its karma this happened to him.

Racecardriver · 10/11/2018 11:09

@duchessstabby but what if she had to emergency stop? He wasn’t irritating her, he was putting her and everyone else in the immediate vicinity at risk. Emergency stops are a frequent occurrence on those kinds of roads, deer, people stopping to turn/pulling out, coming around the bend to see a cyclist, idiot boy racers over taking on a blind bend. I do one of these types of roads on the school run. I initiate emergency breaking every second time. I will come to a full stop as acesult about once a week. If there is a tailgater behind me it will result in an accident. It’s not irritating (I don’t really care that much) but it is dangerous and incredibly stupid.
