Tailgated by boy racer....then....karma?

Tonight I was driving home from work and was severely tail gated by an idiot in a fiesta. We are talking bending country roads with blind corners and tight bends. This guy was so close that I was scared he was going to hit me. I couldn't pull over at any point as there was no safe place for overtaking anyway. Eventually we come to a stretch and I let him past.
A few minutes later I see hazard lights up ahead. The idiot had tried to overtake on a blind corner and had to swerve out of the way of a poor lady who was shaking like a leaf. Boy racer idiot was 30ft into a field with the entire back end of his car off. He wasn't badly hurt.
Is it wrong that I was slightly smug that he came to such an accident. He could have killed someone so I can only hope he is off the road for some time.

@duchesstabby "If someone tailgates you and it bothers you, you either let them past, or you dont and they stay behind you"

Well, yes, or you need to do an emergency stop, and they plow into the back of you, killing you and your children.

An old man in a jag overtook me on “the fosse” I then watched him overtake again after Halford, he nearly had a head on but somehow didn’t. As we came up to Chesterton, just over the M40 bridge the old man was stood looking at his radiator fluid all over the front of the crumpled bonnet.

Fortunately it looked liked all concerned were unhurt

There are plenty of of signs along the fosse as to the numbers of crashes, but some motorists think there invincible

MsLexic · 09/11/2018 21:30

I am glad he ended up in a field but sadly he had frightened someone else. Stupid idiot. There are some utter cowardly little twats about.

Tailgating is an offence, it is not annoying, it's extremely dangerous and people have died as a result.
He didn't have an accident and if you read the post properly you would see the poster could not pull over. I am sure she would not have been delighted if he had been wrapped round a tree.

I think any 'glee' is aimed at the hope that this twazzock will have had such a shock that it will prevent him driving like this again, and may save others being injured or killed. This is a good thing, IME. Would those hand-wringing over the 'glee' have preferred him to have carried on and hurt someone else?

ShovingLeopard · 09/11/2018 21:40

IMO, not IME

SnipSnipMisterBurgess · 09/11/2018 21:40

It’s not karma, just his speed catching up with him. He’ll probably laugh it off in a few days. Some drivers believe they are invincible. If this happened me, I think I’d share the hell out of it on local social media, as I think sometimes peer/community disapproval and shaming can be very effective.

Shirleyphallus · 09/11/2018 21:42

Would those hand-wringing over the 'glee' have preferred him to have carried on and hurt someone else?

Yes. That’s absolutely what we are saying. We wish he’d carried on and injured other people. Hmm

LaBelleSausage · 09/11/2018 21:46

One of the most satisfying moment of my driving life was after being tailgated by an absolute idiot.
I live in an area where there are frequent changes from 60/40/30/20/30/40/60 etc and I usually drive at the limit if conditions are ok as I know the road.

There was a guy behind me, absolutely irate that I had actually slowed to 40 after coming out of the 60, and was wiggling around so close I couldn’t read his number plate, trying to get past me on a country road. The moment we got to the 20 where I was still driving the limit, he absolutely floored it past me, and the car in front of me and continued to speed away, until the car in front of me put its blue lights on and pulled him over, turns out it was an undercover police car Grin

IAmNotLikeThem · 09/11/2018 21:52

That’s God’s will IvyKaty44 for had he got to the crossroads at Harbury Lane just a few hundred yards later that could have been quite serious given the number of accidents that occur there weekly.

There are few things on a country road where you are travelling at no more than probably 45mph which are going to cause someone to hit you at sufficient speed from behind to kill you and your children

what country roads are you driving on?

most are 60mph limit and people do 60.

then there are the hazards,
Deer come out of no where and if you see one jump out you know at least another will be following.

pedestrians and bikes, plus maybe an on coming car at the same time.

stray farm animals.

If someone is tailgating you they have no braking distance, so you don't need and emergency stop for them to hit the back of you, which in turn could spin the back end of the car enough to put you in danger of ending up in ditch, a hedge, an on coming car.......

people are not gloating, the idiot was a dangerous driver......

Smsmeeesmeghhhehead · 09/11/2018 22:01

Of course it's intimidating when someone is so close. I can't see how you could ignore them when you might be in a collision at any moment

Had my mum driving me years ago on a bad road with loads of hills and blind bends. A lorry was very very close behind, no where to stop so they could overtake. She did the flashing breaks, slowing down etc and couldn't stop him. All the things advised if you're being tailgated.

Eventually she had enough. Got to a bit of road with a traffic island so he couldn't escape, got out and gave him an incredible balling out. She looks a little old lady so not the kind of person you'd expect to give an earful. She also took note of the company name on the side of the lorry and rang them when home. He was so shocked he did no more tailgating of us and I hope thought twice in the future.

ivykaty44 · 09/11/2018 22:05

imnotlikethem there are so many dangerous drivers about & more than there fair share in this road, they don’t all come within the same genre

5 people every day die at the hands of motorists driving badly, it’s not gloating, but surely a case of there but for the grace of goodness go I as we walk away without a scratch

AmIthatbloodycold · 09/11/2018 22:28

Ah well Duchess I equally don't understand how people don't.

That's life I suppose

Duchess it is ridiculous to be falling over yourself to prove how holier-than-thou you are, by getting all judgy that OP is glad the accident prevented anybody else from being hurt by this deeply selfish individual's behaviour.

ShovingLeopard · 09/11/2018 22:33

It's not 'driving the OP didn't like', Duchess.

It is driving dangerously and recklessly to the point that lives were put in danger. Not sure why you can't see that the prevention of that is a good thing.

ivykaty44 · 09/11/2018 22:40

just google
How many people were killed by motorists in 2017
And it’ll give you the figures in a graph
It was 1710 for 2017 slightly less than the 1799 the year before

Clearthinking · 09/11/2018 22:42

My boyfriend at time had just learnt to drive, was doing 40 trying to build up to 60. Bloke in big range rover type thing got annoyed at how slow he was going so blocked my partner approacher our car and proceeded to punch his lights out. Can't win, going to fast or to slow. How people get so angry because someone won't move quick enough is beyond me. Learn patience

MorrisZapp · 09/11/2018 22:43

This isn't karma, it's a direct consequence of the guys actions. Tailgating and insane overtaking ruin country driving. Hope his insurance ruins him.

Veterinari · 09/11/2018 22:44

I was once terribly tailgated on the motorway. Rush hour and couldn’t go any faster (because at speed limit and car infront). I moved over to let him pass and he immediately tail gates the car infront who also pulled in let him and past.

Not excusing tailgating but why the fuck are you not in the left hand lane if it’s clear for you to pull in and you aren’t overtaking?
