What were/are the "true stories" about your town?

Potentially a bit outing if you happen to be from the small place that I grew up in but never mind.

I was reminded earlier of facts that were "absolutely 100%" true about my town when I was growing up. As well as various haunted houses, two that stick in my mind are that:

  • there was historically a "Great Beer Flood" in which a brewery exploded and the town was swimming in beer. If I recall correctly a single dog drowned but thankfully there were no other casualties.
  • the local Tesco was the only one in the country that could be seen from space. I was so old when I finally realised that this couldn't be true, definitely over 20.

What ridiculous rumours did or do you know about your town?

That on a certain day of the year in the town square you can shoot a Welshman dead with a bow and arrow and not face criminal charges.

Don’t think anyone’s tried it yet mind.

A highwayman was set up by the town folk for sheep rustling. They hung, drawn and quartered. Apparently they dug him up as the town folk was superstitious.

@ColinsVeryJolly I wonder why a bow and arrow specifically!

First ever policeman killed on the beat was killed and buried in our town.

Very gruesome circumstances and apparently he haunts the village graveyard...
