? Abandoned car

I have noticed a car over the past couple of weeks which is parked at the road side about 300 yards or so from where I live

It is quite a rural road and isn't near any houses, a foot path or a bus stop

It is not part covered in leaves so I'm fairly sure it hasn't moved since I first noticed it a couple of weeks ago

I suppose it could have broken down (04 reg)

I don't want to be a busy body and it isn't causing any sort of obstruction but just wondering at what point (eg. After now many weeks) I should report it and to who (police, DVLA, local council)

The thing in the back of my mind is that the last time a car was abandoned in similar location it turned out the owner had jumped from the nearby train viaduct but his body was not found for several weeks

Now covered in leaves. Typo

Just give the police a quick ring and let them know. It could be a stolen car or as you said, the car of a missing person.

Does it have current tax?

shaggedthruahedgebackwards · 09/11/2018 14:11

Yes - I have googled the reg no and it is taxed til April 2019

Any seemingly abandoned vehicles should be reported to the local council but the time scale on how long to leave it is up to you. You just fill in a form online asking for simple things like a description of the car, reg plate, its location and how long it's been there. You sometimes need to provide your details too in case they need to contact you for further information, like if they're struggling to locate it for example.

They'll pop along, leave a note on the windscreen and go from there. It won't say that you reported it. I think as part of their investigation they check in with the police to see if it's reported stolen or belongs to a missing person etc.

We get a lot of abandoned cars near to where I work due to the location so we're having to do this more and more.

Seems to be a classic case of 'call 101'. It could have been stolen and dumped there for example.

Dvla website will tell you if its m.o.t'd as well.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 09/11/2018 14:23

Not the police, council.

Submariner · 09/11/2018 14:44

Don't call or the police. Google 'report an abandoned vehicle' and follow the links for your local area. You may find you have to report again in a week if they haven't been to sort it.

Thanks for the advice
I'm going out shortly so can double check it's still there
If it is then I'll follow your advice when I get home Submariner
