Does anyone know this short story?

I have a vague recollection that it was in a collection I read at school. Someone is stroking their cat that is sitting on their lap and they are putting their fingers in it's fur and they discover a zip pull. I can't remember anything else and Google is not helping!

I recognised this. Is it a story or a poem?

It's definitely a short story. There's a poem called 'A Case of Murder' that people always think I am thinking of, but it's definitely not that.

Is it in an anthology you had to study for GCSE?

I think it's this: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Daydreamer_(novel)

The Daydreamer by Ian McEwan

"Looking down through the fur, and parting it with the tips of his fingers ,he saw that he had opened up a small slit in the cat’s skin. It was as if he were holding the handle of a zip. Again he pulled, and now there was a dark opening two inches long. William Cat’s purr was coming from in there"

YES!!!!! it is !!! Thank you so much TheFifthKey
Going to order it now!
