Potty training- ready or not??

My ds is 3 and 2 months. He’s very bright and articulate, stubborn, socially quite immature and is at home with me full time, youngest of 3 dc.

We have attempted potty training this week. From 9am Monday morning with him refusing to ever wear pants, he has graduated to being able to say when he’s doing a wee, so therefore getting wet. I’ve put him on the potty every single time. What he’s started doing now (since yesterday) is holding the wee in once he’s on the potty, sometimes for several hours getting on and off, and eventually being so desperate he’s eventually wet completely through. He seems unable to allow himself to release once on the potty, as if the purpose of training is to not wee at all.

Everyone says you’ll know when they are ready, but I cannot tell. Do you think this is a sign of being not ready yet? I’ve done 3.5 days cooped up inside the house now and can’t really see that he is any more trained than before, although on the other hand he seems to have pretty good bladder control as he can hold it for so long even after saying he’s going. But he’s not actually weeing on the potty!

I’m so confused, if anyone has any advice I’d be so grateful!

I always told mine they could have a chocolate button if they did a wee on the potty. 3 for a poo!

Dangermouse thanks, we have some stickers but I don’t really want to go down the route of chocolate every time. He’s the sort of child to just make a fuss every time. He had a sticker for trying every time the last few days

My dd pt in 3 days at 3 years 3months

My ds is 4 in March and after 2 weeks we have finally got there

He got a sweet and a sticker every time he used the potty. When he finished the chart, he got to pick a toy

Soubtiquet thanks.

Any experiences of this extensive ‘holding’ the wee? My other two potty trained quite quickly, but it was more the other way- they’d wee all the time, wet pants 2-3 times a day for a few days and then improvement gradually. This one is the opposite- he’s point blank refusing to wee and holding it in for hours!

Yes

DS was waking up in the morning, nappy off and then he was refusing to wee for hours. We would put a nappy on him for nap time and then he would flood.

One day we kept him awake all day and gave him plenty of juice till eventually he had to go.

In which case we made a massive fuss praising him from even going in the first place (just so happened he went on the potty so got double the fuss) and after that we never had a problem

Soubriquet thanks, that gives me hope then! I have done that today and he has eventually done one wee on the potty, ‘self controlled’ rather than bursting if that makes sense. My concern was that it was a sign he wasn’t really ready for PT, but I might persist for another day or two.

I think persisting is the key.

Ds is incredibly stubborn so was hard to break
