Anyone had gastroscopy through the nose?

I've had gastroscopies where they put the tube through your mouth before, but this time it's going through the nose. I didn't think the tube would be wide enough for this! It's to avoid the gagging reflex apparently.
Has anyone had this? Is it going to be ok......

Try the "General Health" board? I had a thing up my nose once and was given Valium, didn't remember a thing or have any soreness or after effects

Hi, had this a few years ago. I was revolted by the thought, tense as hell, really didnt want to do it but had a valium. It was fine, such a simple procedure oddly enough, I couldn't believe how easy it all was. So try to relax its definitely nowhere near as bad as you think it will be and you'll be out in less than half hour.

Thank you longway. I think I'll just be given a numbing spray, no Valium. But Im glad it wasn't bad!

Really, I was needlessly a nervous wreck. You'll be fine, good luck.

I've had nasal intubation and they only used numbing cream. It wasn't exactly pleasant but it was copeable.

Are they going to examine your oesophagus and stomach or your vocal cords, and trachea etc, @Cyclingpast?

In my experience as a theatre nurse, gastroscope, which is examination of the stomach and oesophagus, is always done via the mouth, but laryngoscopy (which is endoscopic examination of the larynx, trachea and vocal cords) uses a much narrower diameter endoscope, and is done via the nose.

I have had both gastroscopy and laryngoscopy - the gastroscopy was done through my mouth, under sedation, and the laryngoscopy was done with via my nose, with just numbing spray on the back of my throat - it wasn’t pleasant, but it was OK.

STDG it's the oesophagus and stomach. I've been referred to a private clinic (by my NHS GP) because of waiting times I assume. And apparently they use the through the nose endoscope "whenever possible".

They are called inHeatlh, if you are interested in looking them up.

I've had the nose tube done, it's a weird feeling to begin, then at one point it made me gag, I said I was going to be sick so they gave me a tissue!.
I wasn't given any spray before, maybe it helps to stop the gagging feeling?
I wasn't sick and the tube was soon passed that point, there wasnt any other sensation after that.

I can't say I found it painful just odd, taking the tube out was quicker and no gagging feeling.

Hope yours goes well.
