Yellow crust on hand foot and mouth disease sores

My son mostly has sores around his mouth rather than anywhere else, just a few on his hands and some very small red ones over his legs, lower back and bum/groin. The ones around his mouth look very large, red and sore today and some of them have a golden yellow crust on them. Is this normal or a sign that there is another infection?

I’ve been wondering whether it’s impetigo rather than hfmd but he has had all the symptoms of hfmd starting with feeling very ill, fever, sore throat and has also had diarrhoea for about two days before the spots appeared. He keeps messing with the spots on his face and has been picking at them. The spots on the rest of his body don’t look scabby and crusty. I didn’t think he had any spots on the palms of his hands yesterday, but now that I’ve looked I can see quite a lot of very small red dots on them. Can hfmd sores become infected with impetigo if messed with? The doctor was a bit unimpressed yesterday when I called to get some advice and confirmation that it was hfmd so I don’t want to call again if yellow crusts are normal.

Yes it could have a secondary infection. I would ring Dr again.

My first thought was impetigo. If you really don't want to bother gp see if practise nurse is available or a pharmacist. You might still need gp but at least you will have explored other avenues and they can't fob you off the same as before
