Why is it a competition!?

I've just gone back to work after maternity leave to a new job. I saw a friend yesterday and the conversation was like this....

Friend how's job and going back?
Me it's good but I'm knackered
Friend I do five days though not three so it's a lot harder for me
Me I'm lucky to do three days
Friend you also had a years mat leave I only had nine months
Me ok

Why bother asking how I am if the conversation is then going to be about you?

It's all me me me with her isn't it? Is she like that generally?

Zapho · 08/11/2018 10:26

I've distanced myself from the friend I had like that. It was when I told her I was really struggling with pregnancy nausea and her reply was she felt sick most days too..

I have had friends like this. We are no longer friends.

Worst was when I had ME and was talking about feeling exhausted. Apparently I would have no idea what tiredness was until I had a baby.

What do you get out of this friendship?

DMinor · 08/11/2018 10:37

I actually don't get much from any friendships

You've got the wrong friends then Op.

some people are just like that. I was at school with a girl and you couldn't moan about your spots without her dramatically going on about how much worse hers were.

I find saying "Wow. I guess you win then!" makes them shut up Grin

My SIL and BIL are competitive doom-mongers. I don't bother talking about myself with them anymore as they make it such a competition. To top it off, the first time I definitely merited more sympathy than them (Mum had died that year) the rude fuckers didn't say a word and looked uncomfortable when I mentioned her. Ignorant twats.

Make it clear people like that are being rude, op, what have you got to lose?

DMinor · 08/11/2018 12:12

Yeah I always seem to have the wrong friends I've given up with all that I think

There is NO ONE and I mean NO ONE busier, more tired, overworked, unappreciated, underpaid, has as much washing, has less sleep etc etc than my Mother!

When chatting to my DM, I now just sit nodding my head for an hour, there's no point me contributing to the conversation, because if I say works been a nightmare, before I've finished my sentence she goes off on a 10 minute rant about how busy she is!

Everything is a competition nowadays with a lot of people, I like to call these people 2shits, if you've had one, they've had 2, if you've been to Tenerife, they've been to Elevenerife.

DMinor · 08/11/2018 12:36

Yep people are shite. I've listened to people for hours then when I've had something to say they're suddenly deaf
