Kindle question...

BaconAndAvocado · 07/11/2018 08:18

10 yo DD would like a kindle for Christmas.

I've seen one for £120 on amazon with 8GB and wi-fi ( I really know nothing about tech so none of that means anything to me!)

It's called a Kindle paper white and is waterproof!

Would this be a good bet for her?

No idea whatsoever about to put book on it but I'll come back on here once we get it Grin

Yes, the paperwhite is the one to get, and that's the latest, just released version, but wait until the black friday deals come out as there's a good chance you'll get at least £20-30 off that price. Look at Amazon and also Currys, Argos and John Lewis.

whiskeysourpuss · 07/11/2018 08:34

Does she want it for reading only or does she want to use it for games etc?

scaryteacher · 07/11/2018 11:29

I have the basic Kindle and the paperwhite, both are good. I also have a Fire as does ds, and mine is invaluable.

You need the Kindle to connect to the internet to buy and download the books. Be warned, it is addictive. I looked yesterday and I have in excess of 2000 books on my Kindle.,

The latest paperwhite is the one to get, and they always have good deals in the black friday events.

You just buy kindle books on your Amazon account and they will turn up on her kindle when she's on wi fi.

Thanks all.

Yes, just for reading. She has an iPad for games etc.

Log on to Amazon -find a book and click 'download' it will give you choices for which devise to download it too

Once brought she can read it on her kindle or iPad or phone - if she downloads the kindle app

One book 3 devices

On your Amazon account click manage devises to see move download change etc each book

There's any option to get one with "wifi and free4G" but it's £100 more.

She won't need that wil she?

The cheaper one has 8GB, is that enough?

Wait, the latest paperwhite is waterproof? I thought that was the next one up.

BaconAndAvocado · 07/11/2018 12:45

The one released today is waterproof.

Damnit, you're right. I've just got new ones for DH and me. Any idea how to tell if they are the new ones (other than dropping it in the bath?).

Yeahmum · 07/11/2018 12:47

Thanks @Bacon. Grr

BarbaraofSevillle · 07/11/2018 13:35

I would say she doesn't need the 4G version, or it's certainly not worth paying the extra for. You just buy books while you are at home, or somewhere where wifi is available.

If you had a book buying emergency, I'm sure you could pop into McDonalds, a cafe, or anywhere else that has free wifi to connect up.

There is a web browser, but it's virtually unusable.

BarbaraofSevillle · 07/11/2018 13:36

8G is plenty. It holds hundreds of books and you can keep them in your Amazon account too.

I have an older paperwhite, that probably only has 1, 2 or 4 GB and it has about 400 books on it, and it's nowhere near full.

dementedpixie · 07/11/2018 13:37

I just have a Wi-Fi one. If I am out and about and want a book I can use my phone as a mobile hotspot

CrispbuttyNo1 · 07/11/2018 13:43

I would just get her to use the kindle app on her iPad and then she can have something else as a present.

dementedpixie · 07/11/2018 13:45

IPad isn't as portable and wouldn't be good in bright sunlight. If she wants a kindle for reading then I'd get one

FloofyDoof · 07/11/2018 14:03

Kindle paperwhite is great. I always said I didn't want one, I love paper books but my DS gave me one for my birthday, and I love it. Its worth looking at Prime reading, and Kindle unlimited if she's a big reader.

sashh · 07/11/2018 14:08

Definitely get waterproof, I have a number of kindles due to bath related incidents, although rice does dry them out surprisingly well.

She doesn't need 4G unless she wants to buy books out and about, just buy them at home or wherever there is wifi. Once the book is downloaded it is on the device so can be read elsewhere.

Spam88 · 07/11/2018 14:26

I wouldn't bother with the 4g. I had it (well, 3G) on my first kindle and only used it to download a book whilst out and about once. Plus public WiFi is far more available these days.

BaconAndAvocado · 08/11/2018 22:08

It arrived today. It's so light and looks very beautiful!
