“After three days of low carbing you lose your sweet tooth” ⬅️ LIES!

I’ve been low carbing for over two months now.

Bread, pasta, rice, pizza - I don’t miss at all.
Potatoes - don’t miss them but they would make life easier.

But BUGGER ME all I can think about for the last week or two has been chocolate cake, toffees, millionaires shortbread, magnum choc ices, choc chip cookies.

And before you say anything, two squares of 70% dark chocolate does not cut it.

You know that thing they say about you lose your sweet tooth three days in? It’s absolute baloney!!!

Totally agree, it’s utter rubbish.

RandomMess · 06/11/2018 21:28

My sugar craving is totally and undeniably linked to my hormones!!!

Florries · 06/11/2018 21:31

When I was on the Dylan diet, yoghurt saved me. Carbs I could do with out. I would mix in sweetener and cocoa powder sometimes too.

Dukan* diet

Yup, total bollocks. I've done low carb for weeks on end -- not only did I crave doughnuts and cake and ice cream but also crusty bread, pasta and potatoes.
You can only exist on steak and eggs or cooked breakfasts three times a day for so long......

halfwitpicker · 06/11/2018 21:36

Not to be that person, but does it ease of you have a snack with protein and fat? Cheddar cheese?

Lonesurvivor · 06/11/2018 21:42

It's not rubbish to say you'll lose cravings when you low carb but in my experience it takes longer than 3 days. For me it takes between 3 and 7 very hellish days and suddenly one day I wake up totally uncovered about food. After that I'll very rarely be hungry and have zero cravings. I say this as someone who is a serious carb addict.

I've probably done low carb 5/6 different times this year successfully but also had lots of failed efforts of getting back into it where I couldn't overcome the initial few days of cravings.
It's worth persevering though, I've lost 3 stone this year and am hoping to do the same next year.

PhilODox · 06/11/2018 21:43

I think it depends on your taste buds tbh. I have drastically reduced my sugar intake, and I am genuinely not missing sweet things.
I read threads on MN all the time about what people are snacking on, or what they'd have for a treat, and probably half of them choose savoury things (crisps, nuts, cheeses, etc). I used to be Confused at those posters, now I'm thinking "mmm, I'd like some kettle chips", not hankering after cake or chocolate at all.

toffee1000 · 06/11/2018 21:47

A couple of years ago I did a combo of 5:2 and low carb for six weeks, managed to lose about a stone, give or take. Did the carb cravings go? Nope. Courgetti is a shit substitute for spaghetti, it was crap when my mum and I had courgetti bolognese (she was doing the same thing) and my brother and father had proper pasta. Cauliflower rice was OK, except it honks.

Meet0nTheIedge · 06/11/2018 22:13

I stuck it on and off for about 6 months, I haven't got a sweet tooth at all so didn't crace sweet stuff but the cravings for bread and crisps never went away at all. It was the lack of crunch as much anything, plus everything tasted greasy without carbs to mop it up.

GoopWrithing · 06/11/2018 22:14

I agree. I did more or less low carbing for a couple of years. Lost weight just fine, but I've never been more obsessed about the idea of bread than then, and for the first time in my life craved sweets, just because I knew I wasn't "allowed" them.

Carbivorous · 07/11/2018 10:45

Agree courgetti is horrendous; sour and sloppy!

I’m eating lots of meat and cheese, full fat yoghurt, veggies.

Yes to the poster who says I just want some crunch! I’d do anything for some Kettle chips.

Surprisingly I don't really miss bread/pasta/rice. I've always had a sweet tooth but think it has lessened slightly, I still love cake and ice cream but find all I want is a taste.

I did find making toasted english muffins with almond flour gives that nice crunch you miss sometimes though. Maybe try Parmesan crisps?

I like courgetti though so what do I know?!

RaininSummer · 07/11/2018 12:22

Totally agree. Low carbed quite successfully but missed variety and crunch more than anything. Being a non meat eater really didn't help. I have kept a lot of the principles and rarely eat spuds or pasta but it's lovely having toast and brown rice again. Carbs are my downfall however as they make me so hungry.
