Would you walk through the woods at night?

Pitch black at 6pm, with no lights. So dark you can't see your own feet.

The walk is about 10 minutes.

No way

No point to prove about being brave etc

As far as possible, I won't be alone in a remote area whereby if I were attacked there would be little chance of escape or being heard/rescued.

I'm not small in stature and can defend myself. I don't want to have to though so no woods for me thanks.

I have a vivid imagination anyway and perhaps that's to do with horror films but it's predatory heartless humans I'm more so wary of.

wafflyversatile · 07/11/2018 00:19

If I had to but I would end up tripping over running from the sound of my own breath.

AornisHades · 07/11/2018 00:26

Well no as I have mobility problems that mean I trip up on pavements so walking unaccompanied on rough ground is asking for trouble.

RussellTheLoveMuscle · 07/11/2018 00:36

Yes, my dog and I do most nights. We love it.

PickAChew · 07/11/2018 00:38

No.

Even in the lovely woods near us, I move quickly, even in daylight.

PickAChew · 07/11/2018 00:42

My local woodland is urban, duches

gluteustothemaximus · 07/11/2018 00:46

No. Fecking. Way.

80sMum · 07/11/2018 00:51

Yes, I do that sometimes if I'm walking home in the winter. My walk takes me through some woodland. I usually carry a torch but prefer not to use it. My eyes get accustomed to the darkness. It's easier in woods in winter as the leaf canopy is diminished, so moonlight can get through.

I don't like doing it when it's windy though, as the wind drowns out other sounds and i like to be able to hear what's going on around me, especially important if I can't see very far ahead.

SleightOfMind · 07/11/2018 01:18

Yes but I’d have my wits about me and be sensible.

I often finish work late and walk from the train station to my house after midnight. I also have dogs so walk them at night sometimes.
We’re in London now and I’ll merrily pop to the local shop to get emergency bread/milk/wine at all hours. That’s probably less safe.

The woods near us are stunning at nighttime, especially in summer. City streets at night are entrancing too.
It’s a magical time to be out walking and I wouldn’t miss it for the world.

Honestly, you should all get out and walk more. You’re just as (un)likely to be stranger raped in the daylight as at night.

Can’t promise y’all won’t get darked on though Grin

Anyone know where to find the Savernake story? I can't find it via search etc.

Theyprobablywill · 07/11/2018 08:50

Possibly Michael Ryan? A mass murderer who started his killing spree in Savernake Forest. This was in the late 1980s

mostdays · 07/11/2018 08:55

No.
Would have done years ago. But not now.

Swanhild · 07/11/2018 09:00

The Savernake story really doesn't deserve its reputation -- it's just another one of those Mn stories about someone's dogs getting terrified at a Something Sinister in the dark and everyone pelting back to the house a hairsbreadth ahead of the Something Sinister, while the dogs heroically guarded their owner.

I'd class it with Tristan and Molly and the camping pods, personally, though less obviously amusing, though without the snag that the OP's traumatised husband kept schtum about the Sinister Camping Pod Happenings for an entire calendar year before deciding to spill the beans to a virtual stranger.

IceniSky · 07/11/2018 09:00

I jog through woods at dusk. One set I am fine with but the other woods next door freaked me out. Felt so heavy and wrong. I won't go into them during the day.

I wouldn't in the pitch black unless with someone else.

KarrisWhiteOak · 07/11/2018 09:07

Savernake story. Which whether true or not freaked me right out. And I used to love the woods at night.

PoisonousSmurf · 07/11/2018 09:12

Never in an urban wood. But in the middle of the countryside? Yes and I have done plenty of times.

LaurieFairyCake · 07/11/2018 09:31

Well of course not.

World is full of (literal) wankers. I don't like random cock.

sparklyllama · 07/11/2018 10:58

I used to do it a few years ago when I had my (very protective) dog; always felt very safe with him next to me.
Tho thinking about it; if anyone had thrown him a nice piece of steak I would have been forgotten about briefly.

missperegrinespeculiar · 07/11/2018 11:30

Well, I used to, years ago when It was a convenient shortcut to get home from work (we have moved now), I often finished late, but then Security had a stern word, citing a whole list of accidents that had happened there... but in a rural area that I knew well? probably yes

shiveringtimber · 07/11/2018 11:40

Nope, never. Not a chance.

DeadCertain · 07/11/2018 12:02

I run through woodland and around the countryside in the dark frequently - I live in a rural area and feel much safer than I would do running around an urban area at night.

shiveringtimber · 07/11/2018 12:15

OMG, have a look at the "woo thread" a PP put a link to. Very chilling.

InterstellarScreamingElla · 07/11/2018 12:19

Absolutely not, I've seen enough crime and horror shows to know that walking through the woods in the dark will likely lead to my untimely demise!

Oh and I have poor coordination and am clumsy as hell so would likely end up arse over tit in mud before I was killed off by whatever was lurking in the woods!

speakingtruthfully · 07/11/2018 12:36

Used to walk through the woods to my friends house and back about 20 mins walk total most of it say 18 mins in woods when we were about 14 - 16 years old

Wouldn't consider it at all now - just too many risks
