I've broken off a massive chunk of tooth

Top wisdom tooth. No pain but a funny feeling for a while, sounded different.
It looks like it was hollow the entire bottom and one side came off in a big chunk! I’m just left with the bottom 4mm of tooth and the inner side. The base is only about 2mm thick, it looks like the whole tooth was hollow. No pain. There’s a bit of brown but it’s mostly a normal tooth colour, as is the remaining big.

How bad is this??? I’ve never needed any dental treatment in my life, my last dental check up the dentist asked if it was causing trouble and said it may need future removal, but didn’t sound overly worried. I wasn’t expecting this! It’s always been a undersized looking wisdom tooth, and now it’s just flakes off on a piece of sweet corn!!

i would call your dentist 1st thing tomorrow and try to get an emergency appointment so they can look at it

Yeah definitely get to the dentist.

You might need a crown. I had one last year after similar. Silver colour on the nhs. Still cost quite a bit but a white one was over £400 iirc.

This happened to me last weekend. My first double tooth at the top, the whole front just seems to of sliced (?) off. I've got dentist next week. It doesn't hurt but part of the broken bits are in my gum. I realise this is no help but I just thought.. Hey me too kind of thing. Sorry.

NicoAndTheNiners · 06/11/2018 18:10

At least so far back it shouldn't be noticable. I think mine is a bit noticable which bugs me. But no problem since the repair.

The soonest I could get was next Tuesday. There’s no pain, redness or infection that is obvious. I plan to keep super clean, saltwater rinse and only do emergency if painful. I’m very dental phobic but can manage my usual one

It’s above my gum, just. One side is full length. It’s grim though.

I imagine as a wisdom tooth it’d be a case of just removing it?

It might be. I also lost a chunk of tooth earlier this year but it wasn’t right at the back. I had a root canal filling then crown. Would have been quicker to have it out to be honest.

Good luck, it’s never as bad as you think.

Oh well- it has to come out (hospital referral) but otherwise no issues and rest of my teeth ok as a plus
