I’m a 70s child with a very poor memory!!

looking at the housework thread made me wonder what a typical meal plan looked like in the 60s & 70s?

I can remember a lot of pies & stews, and chips with omelette.. what did you have ?!

Condensed milk which we used to have straight from tin. 😂

Lots of egg and dunkers for us too. If Dad was being fancy the dunkers were toasted.

Born in 76. My mum was more of the school of lentils and carrot sticks. I longed for crispy pancakes. Although weirdly we did have tinned meatballs!? But with real pasta and Parmesan. Weirdo.

Stews, roasts, pies (birds eye chicken ones I remember), mum made spagbol with really long spaghetti, oxo cubes and tomato purée. Mini frozen pizzas we had, oven chips - remember going monthly to Beejam to buy frozen food. Sausages, chops etc with potato's and veg were the mainstay meals. Vesta paella. She still has the cook books and I've made a few retro things from them. Meat and 2 veg was king still I remember.

For pudding at weekends nothing much has changed - she still makes steamed sponge puddings and fruit pies to this day, yummy they are, but the custard is no longer birds and no artificial cream whip stuff, we have Tesco finest fresh custard or double cream now. As kids we had dessert every day (don't tell mine!) tinned fruit and evaporated milk featured heavily, angel delight (I still like it) and mr Kipling apple pies, ooh and frozen mousse or vanilla ice cream and magic ice topping (though this may have been in early 80's).

I remember mid 70s getting ‘lager & lime’ lolly ices from the shop as a massive treat, and thinking that we were drunk!!!!

Taffeta you reminded me... Toast Toppers!!

Some kind of salty spread from a little tin that you put on toast then grilled.

WE loved it.. makes me wince now just thinking of it.. 🤮🤮

Beef stew with mashed potatoes
Mince and mash
Pork or lamb chops
Toad in the hole
Marmite sandwiches

We never had pasta - even in the 80s my father thought pasta was a bit exotic.

For pudding DM used to make this amazing mousse sort of cross between angel delight and jelly or possibly involving condensed milk. We called it heavenly fluff.

Toast toppers

God they were lovely. I was addicted to Ham and Cheese one when pg in 1986.
