Any iPhone experts out there?

I’m currently using an iPhone 7 Plus which is a great phone, no problems with it. I’m due for an upgrade and DD is desperate for me to upgrade so she can have my phone.

I rang my provider today to sort a billing query and made a snap decision to upgrade. I’ve gone for the iPhone XR which I’m now thinking isn’t actually that great as an upgrade and, in particular, is my current camera actually better?

I’ve looked online at too many reviews and sales and I haven’t reassured myself that I’m not going to hate it.

Has anyone gone from the 7 plus to XR? Would love to hear some reviews!

DH assures me the camera on the XR is superior to the 7 plus

I have an iPhone X and the camera is really very good.

So much so, I've stopped lugging my DLSR everywhere. Obviously, it doesn't measure up for stuff like portraiture etc. but as an every day camera, I'd recommend it (last phone was an iPhone 6S plus and it's much, much better than that).

DH has the X too - so the XR is similar?

It’s coming tomorrow and I can send it back but has to be unopened...

The XR does not have the superb dual camera set up as the X or the XS but it's still a great phone. Hugely improvement over the 7. The reason it's cheaper is the LCD screen instead of the AMOLED screen of the X/XS.

I would no regret upgrading to the XR. It's a great phone and firmly in the new generation of high speed iPhones. Unless you can warrant the extra 400 quid on a better screen / camera I wouldn't worry.

Plus you can now use the term 'home button wanker' when you see lesser iPhones ;)

SandunesAndRainclouds · 06/11/2018 12:28

Home button wanker 😆😆😆

I’ve had a look at the XS instead but good grief that’s eye wateringly expensive!

As long as I’m still going to have a camera as good, if not better, than the current one (which I think is brilliant) then it’s ok.

The Guardian likes the XR, but with reservations. It’s only one opinion, but worth a read.

The XR camera is better than the 7+, even dropping down to one lens. Bigger light-collectors, much more complex picture analysis, merging of four shots in different apertures/exposures into every snap. You don't need to worry about going backwards.

I went from 7 to XR on day of release.

Love it.

SandunesAndRainclouds · 06/11/2018 19:04

Positive so far - that’s a relief!

I’ve just gone form a 7 to an XR. Camera is fine for a phone camera, better than my 7.

Best thing is the battery life! I was charging my 7 up to 3 times a day, my XR can last 2 full days of faulty heavy use!

SandunesAndRainclouds · 06/11/2018 21:49

My DH thinks I should have gone for the X or kept my 7 plus and changed to SIM only.

I think I’ll go into town in the morning and have a look at it - which is what I should have done in the first place Hmm

I was going to get the XR because of the cost, but bought the XS max on eBay instead. The bloke in the Apple shop said it was the right choice as the XR is a downgrade. I wanted as good a camera as was on my 8+.

Toddlerteaplease · 06/11/2018 22:32

I actually prefer the 8+ to the Xs. Only upgraded S my friend wanted to buy it off me. The 8 is a really good phone.
