Kefir - how does this work?

Giving this a go so bought a range of the yoghurty drinks. How much are you supposed to have each day? They bottles are of a size that suggests that you drink the whole lot at once. Are you supposed to have one a day or less often?
Presumably, once the bugs are in the system they will go forth and multiply?

You can make your own very very cheaply if you get kefir grains

Maidofdishonour · 06/11/2018 10:52

But how do you know how much to use? Is it possible to overdose on bugs!

I have a small cereal bowl's worth most mornings, with cornflakes. Yum!
I get the tesco big white bottles with green lids since it's similar to the scandi stuff I grew up on. I'm sure there are all sorts of better and different kind but this one is affordable and for me, very tasty. Like natural yoghurt but more of a sour kick, if you like sour cream and creme fraiche you will like it.

I have it once a week if I'm in a rush and haven't eaten or I haven't had enough calcium or protein, I have osteoporosis and I'm veggie. It's also good for IBS. I think to overdose on it you would have to have a lot.

P.S: Yes my tum is excellent. Grin

ourkidmolly · 06/11/2018 11:09

Is it better than yogurt? What's the deal. Suddenly seeing it everywhere.

JuliaJaynes9 · 06/11/2018 11:14

It's kind of like a very hardcore version of yoghurt
I used to make my own but it's such a lot of messing around and I gave up with it
I didn't personally feel different from using it even though I was very into the idea that consuming these exotic microbes would do things for me

VanellopeVonSchweetz99 · 06/11/2018 11:14

I don't know if it's better than yogurt, I just find it tastier. It's runnier and has a savoury tang I really like with breakfast cereal. Agreed there's a cult-like trend for it right now, I've had people tell me very advanced things about it, it has to be the right kind, only from special shops, etc.
My scandi and eastern european mates just shrug and smile. You have some for breakfast, you get good poop, that's it.

Kefir quark
Every day
Bloody delicious

Dowser · 06/11/2018 11:29

I must make the worst kefir in the world
Horribly sour and tart

Maryann1975 · 06/11/2018 11:32

Get some kefir grains, grow them with milk. Every day, strain the milk out and add more milk to the grains, use the strained milk for whatever you want. (We found it best in strawberry and banana smoothie). We kept it up for about 8 months until I lost interest, but for the novelty, it was a good way to get extra milk and fruit into the dc.

JuliaJaynes9 · 06/11/2018 11:41

I made keffir for quite a long time @Dowser it was always very sour and tart 😝
I can't say I ever actually liked it 😳

Midnight0 · 06/11/2018 12:20

It is supposed to be sour and tart 😊
I'm Eastern European, and my family drinks kefir most days, the tangier the better. We use it as salad dressing as well, and make the cold soup with it in the summertime. Awww, this thread is making me miss home.

Maidofdishonour · 06/11/2018 18:09

I have had antibiotics recently so hoping this will help

Answering your question Maidofdishonour, I do not think you can overdose on kefir. Worst case scenario, you might get the runs.

choli · 06/11/2018 18:33

It's really nice on muesli, I have it most mornings.

Jakethecob · 06/11/2018 19:11

What is the point of it? I've only heard it spoken about on The Archers. Do I need it?

Kilash · 06/11/2018 19:13

It is reputedly better than yoghurt because it is fermented and contains millions of gut friendly bacteria. Healthy gut bacteria are essential for general health. It also helps with IBS and bloating.
