Anyone up for a caterpillar identity parade?

This fellow was parading at great speed round my garden earlier. He is about 3 inches long, so not a little chap. I have tried to find what he is and failed, so I am turning to the power of the MN collective brain!

Anyone any good at speciation?

Wow! That was quick. I couldn’t find anything this morning. Looking at the adults, we definitely have them around here.
