Will most coffee shops be happy to fill a contigo flask? Even if you have to warm it with boiling water first

I've never had it filled with hot water but I've never had a problem getting it filled in a coffee shop. They're always quite happy to put my coffee in it.

tissuesosoft · 05/11/2018 17:51

I’ve got this contigo and haven’t had to warm it first. Coffee shops take it and it stay warm for hours

CMOTDibbler · 05/11/2018 17:51

I just ask if they can give it a rinse out with boiling water and they are totally happy to do that

stayingaliveisawayoflife · 05/11/2018 17:56

I looooooove my contigo cups, I have a few! I have never warmed them but found the drink still stays hot for ages.

GreenEggsHamandChips · 05/11/2018 17:56

Awesome. That's good to know. Easier to sling in a bag when pushing a wheelchair!

They are fantastic and don’t leak! There is a rubber seal in the lid, it’ll only leak if that comes out

Angrybird345 · 08/11/2018 06:32

That’s really annoying for staff though! Imagine if every customer used one and staff had to rinse and use their boiling water etc. It’s the shops time and resources you’re using. Delaying other customers as well. You would be an annoying customer.

LooksBetterWithAFilter · 08/11/2018 06:35

How long do they keep things hot for? I’m looking for something like this for dh.

StitchingMoss · 08/11/2018 06:35

Really AngryBird? It takes seconds and is about saving the millions of tons of waste currently generated by take away coffee.

Small ask,

earlybyrd · 08/11/2018 06:59

I bought a contigo after it was recommended on MN- i put boiling hot herbal tea in it - which you would think would be ok- and the steam pressure meant it literally exploded in my car showering everything and me in very hot liquid ☹️

GreenEggsHamandChips · 08/11/2018 09:17

@Angrybird345 that's why I was asking if anyone does it, its got to be more annoying than a regular reusable cup. On the other hand if I am for example grabbing a coffee and then pushing a wheelchair for a train or dealing with DS, having the coffee in something that seals automatically is incredibly sensible.

@earlybyrd ShockShock hope you got a refund on the flask! been using one for years and introduced them to family never had one explode on me!!

Couldn't you pop some hot water in it before you leave home or work or where ever you're setting off from? Then the flask will be ready warmed when you get to the coffee shop. You can always tip the hot water down a drain before you go in if you're really worried about inconveniencing someone :)

GreenEggsHamandChips · 08/11/2018 10:05

It's actually I've got a few very long day/hospital trips coming up. Planning to have the flask filled with coffee before leaving home, do a rinse at some point and then have a coffee on the journey home. Won't have access to a kettle. If they're happy doing it I'm more than happy to inconvenience them!! Just wondering if they did do it.

I've never preheated my Contigo and my drinks always stay very hot. Even 2+ hours later I need to sip carefully.
To the previous poster who had the exploding cup - the instructions suggest that you should fill the cup, put on the lid and then press the button which opens the seal, in order to let the steam escape. It helps keep the drink warm for longer too.

earlybyrd · 08/11/2018 14:42

Thanks Schooltrip think I will buy another then as I did really love it up until then typical of me not to read instructions!

Toddlerteaplease · 08/11/2018 19:39

I also never prevwarm my contigo cup. Didn't know it was a thing, besides it keeps it so hot I can't drink it for ages anyway.

LooksBetterWithAFilter · 12/11/2018 06:00

I bought a pack of two travel cups in Costco at the weekend. I usually use my chilly bottle for hot stuff as well as cold but I want to be able to have water and tea so I’ll see how I get on with it. I’ve seen a few places locally saying you get money off your drink if you bring a refillable cup as well so I’ll start using them when I’m out and about.

Ecofluffynanny · 12/11/2018 07:06

You are supposed to open the sippy-flip thing BEFORE you put the lid on. Not after you've put it on. Had mine for ages, never heated it first and it stays hot from leaving home (6.30am) until easily lunchtime/mid-Afternoon. It's never exploded either...open lid first 👍
