Are they any good. Are they going to save me money or cost me more in the long run?

Pointless currently. Offer nothing you couldn't do with other methods and still in their infancy that most aren't interchangeable when you move suppliers

I had a really good experience with ours. We were with British Gas and were plagued with underestimations then overestimations even with submitting regular meter readings. We had no more issues after the smart meter was installed.

It also helped us to keep in the habit of saving energy, which is what reduced our bills slightly. Previously we had a clip on energy meter but it wasn't hugely accurate and seemed to lose its connection a lot. The screen linked to the smart meter was really good and it shocked us into better habits.

It's frustrating that they aren't compatible or transferrable better suppliers though.

I forgot to add- it's mainly the first generation smart meters with the issues switching between suppliers. The second gen ones should be better- more info here: www.telegraph.co.uk/property/smart-living/switching-energy-suppliers/

They’re a huge swizz.

They cost us all more because the cost of installing them is built into bills.

The ones being installed currently are also useless if you switch supplier, so a huge waste of money and resources having them installed.

They would only save you money if you don't already know that switching things on costs money, anything that produces heat costs a lot of money and need a screen with a number on in front of you to tell you this and to then turn things down/off.
