Best way to find snails

Hi

I need to go on a snail hunt later with the kids but what’s the best way to find the little buggers? Also, what’s the best way to pick them up? I saw some on the back of the shed before but they were stuck fast (I think I would have killed them if I pulled any harder)

Thanks

Bring your DCs to my garden, I guarantee there will be no shortage of snails! Certain plants attract them, ours also hang out on the sides of pots and on the garden walls. I've never found one I couldn't pull away, the bigger, older ones have extremely tough shells. Have fun!

They usually come out when it's been raining, often near drains. If you really can't find any, it may be worth pouring some water on the ground around a drain and waiting half an hour.

But why?!

Usually find them hanging around plant pots or under rocks/logs/ and in long grass. Somewhere sheltered and damp.

Thanks everyone

For the poster who asked why - it’s for a school experiment. They have asked us to bring in some snails on Monday then they will be doing experiments to find out which type of habitat they prefer. Eg they will put them in a tank where half of it is dry and the offer half is wet and see which side the snails go to. It sounds more fun than anything I did at school!

Too late for your short term need.
For future reference plant some Hosta’s you’ll be overrun with the little bastards.😁😁

Put them up by breaking their grip rather than just tugging at shell. Lots of their body's are inside the shell so you can hurt them by pulling too hard.

Look in damp places, under plant pots and any decent sized stones.
