MIL is visiting us for the week.

She arrived this morning with a bag full of shopping and offered to make us some lunch whilst I finished tidying .

She made ham and pease porridge ? Pudding ? buns .

I’ve never had this before (it was yummy!) .

Anyway , when I went in to bin some rubbish I noticed the empty tub on the bench with a use by date of yesterday !

I think she’s misread the dates .

Is this stuff going to make us ill ?

I don’t have the heart to ask her (she’s lovely !) .

Envy Not envy .

Use by or best before ?
Either way 1 day out if it smelled ok I’d use it

Blobbyweeble · 03/11/2018 15:37

God no, I’ve been merrily ignoring use by dates for twenty years and none of us have even had a tummy bug let alone food poisoning.

IsThatYouMavis · 03/11/2018 15:37

Definitely use by !

It looked and smelled ok from what little was left in the tub.

Yesterday!!! It doesn't know to go off at midnight, you know.

I routinely ignore use by dates & go by smell & taste. We've never been unwell.

I'm probably of a similar vintage to your MIL

One day out of date? So at 23.59 on Friday night it was ok, but one minute after midnight it's turned to poison??? Stop woohing, you'll be fine

Singlenotsingle · 03/11/2018 15:42

Stop worrying! The woohing was last week!

I think they add some wriggle room /time to use by dates to allow for the fact that not everyone will store food items in optimal conditions. Refrigerated food will always be left at room temperature between leaving store chiller cabinets and being put in fridge at home

I confess I’m a bit of a stickler for food rules Grin
