Twilight - talk to me about the hype it’s 10 years old

I read the books, or at least I think I read them whilst bf 🤔.

Something flashed up on social media that the film was 10 and I realised even though they were super hyped up I’d never seen them. Found them on Netflix so started watching:

KS has really fucking annoying ears throughout the film
All acting is appalling
The story doesn’t flow

They made more of this shite? And then the fan fiction that produced 50 shades and the films? (Attempted to read because of the hype and would like to somehow erase that shocking memory!) Jamie Dormam saved the film. (Just)

In all seriousness how did this get such great hype? And make such a fortune?

Genuinely I despair!!!!😂

Still makes me laugh the whole dream vision sequence in the last film.. Best bit of the film! Wasn't in the books though.. Guess needed something to make it more intresting.

The story is really bad. I enjoy it for the badness of it though.

scarlettoftheseas · 03/11/2018 11:12

Haha!!! I was a massive twilight fan when it came out (I was right in the middle of who it was aimed for) and it took my friends by storm. We knew the movies were a bit cringe but we loved them anyway because we were so into the story - although I don't know how it was for people who'd never read the books.

Funnily enough I rewatched the first one for so nostalgia the other week and watched half of it through my hands! Even worst than I remembered. However I'd be lying if I said I didn't have a soft spot for it. I have a lot of really good memories surrounding the books/films.

However, I obviously grew up and realised how problematic they are. I acknowledge and see those elements. As an adult, i hate bella, edward, and jacob. But still adore the ensemble characters! And I also think the books/films do a good job of creating a wistful otherworldness that you wanna be part of. Or maybe it's just me!
(Sorry this was so long!)

I love the films haha. Don't care enough to read the books though.

The books are badly written shite. I gave up half way through the first one. Never watched the films.

Idontbelieveinthemoon · 03/11/2018 12:36

I watched the first one with DS1 the other day by accident and he loved it. His gasp when we reached the final film and he realised Carlisle's head hadn't been actually ripped off in that vision of Alice's was worth the wait.

He's now halfway through the second book and is madly in love with them all. Who knows what mystical magic she put into those nonsense stories to make them so popular.

driggle · 03/11/2018 13:46

The books are my guilty pleasure. I really enjoyed them.

The movies are cringe. Kristen Stewart twitches and stutters her way through all her lines and makes the weirdest facial expressions.

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 03/11/2018 14:17

I read them because DD was into them, and I'd heard bad things. Horrible books, a complete A to Z of emotional abuse, controlling behaviour, and the finale of waking up covered in bruises after the wedding night. Cedric Diggory died for this shit?

mariniere · 03/11/2018 14:28

I rather enjoyed them but grew tired towards end of the final one. Teen dd also just started them. There is a place for them so long as you read good literature as well; I think they are less annoying than the chick lit/ Liane Moriarty popular garbage many people love these days!

HippoLatte · 03/11/2018 16:30

My niece used to go on and on about them and how amazing they were and I'd roll my eyes as the thought of Vampire movies was just ridiculous to me. Then a few years ago I had nothing to watch one evening and the first one was on. Sigh. I really loved it. So I've seen the films about 3 times now and will watch again soon (it's my Autumn/Winter film, can't be watched any other time of the year).

Yes they are cringey as hell but I can see why some teenagers loved them.

PoohBearsHole · 03/11/2018 22:34

Film3 better than first 2!

NotUmbongoUnchained · 03/11/2018 22:38

The films are awful but I always watch them when they’re on Grin

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 03/11/2018 22:40

I know they're bad but... guilty pleasures, I can enjoy some tosh from time to time!

PoohBearsHole · 03/11/2018 22:41

I will admit I’m not adverse to tosh 😁 one of my favourite films for tosh watching is Starship Troopers

toffee1000 · 03/11/2018 22:42

I read the first book, eventually. Read a few pages of book 2 and gave up, it was awful. Bella was such a miserable whiny person. Needless to say I didn’t bother with the films. I was the right sort of age, but I hated the books.

CarolDanvers · 03/11/2018 22:45

Oh I admit I loved them; books and movies. Still do but not quite as into them as I was. Might have a re-read actually.

Dextrodependant · 03/11/2018 23:01

I watch them to lust over Jacob from film 3 onwards.

ipswichwitch · 03/11/2018 23:05

I bloody love Starship Troopers. Whenever someone in our house gets a cut/scrape I can’t help but shout “medic!” It’s far better quality tosh than Twilight.

PoohBearsHole · 04/11/2018 13:41

We shout medic too 😂

I’ve now watched the whole set of films and they do get markedly “better” but Bella is unlikeable to say the least and the makeup is obvious on Carlisle 🙄.

Liked the wide ranging cast members though just really didn’t like Kristen!

DownWentTheFlag · 04/11/2018 13:45

Oh man I loved those books! I used to take the day off work when the DVDs came out, midnight showings at the cinema, you name it.
Cringe!!!

SmallAndFarAway · 04/11/2018 14:01

Mumsnet killed Twilight for me - I've read too many posts about controlling bastard partners to be able to immerse myself in them again. The books were my favourite trashy reading for years, no more.

I even read half the original fanfiction that became Fifty Shades Of Grey before it got taken down and resold as fiction, it was pretty shite to be fair...

CarolDanvers · 04/11/2018 21:23

@DownWentTheFlag

I went to Twiathalon where they showed all the movies back to back. Twice. Once when BD Part 1 came out, then part 2. I LOVED it.
