Help! Leaky toilet!

OCDpanic · 02/11/2018 12:35

I have OCD contamination and particularly toilet related just been and noticed a small leak of water when I flushed but from the right hand hinge of the toilet seat on top of the toilet what on earth.

I'm hoping I can ignore to be honest but what could be causing this and could it be easily fixed?

I HATE having plumbers in it causes me EXTREME anxiety!

Have also noticed in recent days level of water inside loo low but it's still been flushing fine.

Ok anxiety making me need loo more which is not helping matters!

Just been again, seems the water is coming out the bottom of the - is it cistern? The tank at the back of the toilet?

This is REALLY stressing me out!!

I'm afraid it sounds like you need a plumber, your cistern is probably leaking. Can you see a crack anywhere?
I know you say you are ocd, but the water in a loo cistern is no different to what comes out of your tap - it is perfectly safe.
You can flush your loo by pouring a bucket of water down it, (to save you getting water over the floor when you flush conventionally) but you can also stop it filling by tying up the ballcock (if you have one). Have a look online for instructions.
Good luck with finding a plumber. I say this sounds like the problem, but have you got a handy friend who can cast an eye over it?

I have a phobia of anything to do with toilets inc plumbers cos of the OCD!

Cannot touch it myself and if I had a friend do it I'd never be comfortable in that friends company ever again. No exaggeration.

Plus I'm crap at DIY I'd probably make the matter 10 times worse!!!

I rent so landlord would be one to organise repair but I'm avoiding calling them as I'm so dreading the whole dealing with a plumber or whoever coming in to fix it!

Literally feeling sick and shaky at the thought. This situation is effectively my greatest nightmare

Well, I think in that case you will have to get in touch with your landlord ASAP. Could you arrange to be out when the plumber comes? It is not something to ignore. If your loo is upstairs (or in any case, above other rooms or other people's rooms) water leaks can cause a lot of damage, and I am sure your landlord would rather deal with it while it is a small problem, before water starts dripping through a ceiling.

I understand what you're saying. But there's no water even on the floor it's a small trickle at the moment.

I'm awaiting support from mh services to help me cope with this.

Dreading speaking to landlord tbh asked a friend and they said unlikely to get someone out till mon anyway (we share a landlord)

If the water is coming from the cistern it will be clean water, to put your mind at rest on that point.

Can you hear the cistern refilling when you flush? If you listen you should be able to hear it filling back up. Is it stopping after a couple of minutes or carrying on filling? If it is carrying on the water could be coming from the overflow.
Or it could be the seal between the cistern and the toilet pan, normally a sort of rubber ring.

Neither of these are serious or difficult to fix, but you can't ignore them either as escaping water can cause a lot of damage if left, especially if it gets through ceilings into the downstairs.

Phone your landlord, arrange a plumber to visit. If you can't be there at the same time, can you ask a friend or neighbour to let the plumber in while you go out for an hour or so?

Thank you so much both for replying.

Yes I know it's clean water although to me it's not completely clean like water out the tap. My messed up mind.

When flushing cistern sounds like it is refilling and then stopping refilling as normal.

I'm worried about low level of water in bowl after flushing. It's just a little lower than normal but cos of the OCD I notice this stuff!

I'm worried low level in bowl is related to this leak or indicates another issue.

I do catastrophise which is probably obvious sorry.

Spoke to landlord they are sending someone Monday and are doing all they realistically can to make this easier.

So unfortunately I'm in for a very anxious weekend! Sad

I hate this condition so much!

The cistern is attached to the toilet in such a way as it looks like the back of a chair with the pan as the seat? The water is coming from the right side onto the top at the back sitting on the porcelain 'shelf' not enough water that it's then going on to the floor. Like maybe a dessert spoons worth?

I probably only even noticed it at this point cos of the OCD.

It sounds like the seal. The plumber will sort it on Monday- it sounds like you have a good landlord!
