Where for lunch in York?

Hi, i’m going to York tomorrow with DM (70s) and the dc (7,10). We used to go to Cosmo, but it’s closed down.

Where is good for lunch with dc? Cheap and cheerful rather than fine dining please.

Cosmo closed and reopened as Panda Mami. Same food same concept same venue.

Krieger · 02/11/2018 00:49

Plunkets. It is near the minster.
Proper English food, and oddly, some Mexican too.

KatesMott · 02/11/2018 00:51

The Ivy is lovely if you fancy a splurge, cut and chase too

KatesMott · 02/11/2018 00:52

Clearly missed the cheap and cheerful bit 🙄

tectonicplates · 02/11/2018 00:59

Don't go to a vegan tapas place called El Piano. It's outstandingly crap.

Trappedin · 02/11/2018 01:07

The ivy is cheap, but the food is awful.

PossibiliTea · 02/11/2018 01:23

A really nice tapas place called ambiente it’s average price and does really good sherry!

Girlsnightin · 02/11/2018 08:00

Oscars. Fun and relaxed, great food.

Shitstormiscoming · 02/11/2018 08:14

Can also recommend Ambiente

Gorgeous food and reasonably priced, especially as portions for tapas are quite decent.

The street it is on is also quite funky. There is a fab dress agency shop near to it.

Whatsallthisaboutthen · 02/11/2018 08:21

El Piano has closed anyway.

Shambles market is fun with lots of choice.

tectonicplates · 02/11/2018 08:44

Great news! I'm glad it's closed as it was so shit. One of the worst restaurants I've ever eaten at.

MickHucknallspinkpancakes · 02/11/2018 08:59

Ah is Oscars still open? Lovely memories of family meals there. 🤗

MawkishTwaddle · 02/11/2018 09:13

Plunkets closed years ago.

Don't go to the Panda place that was Cosmo. It's horrendous. I had a bad stomach for a week after DS took me there.

I've lived in York for years but I'm struggling to recommend somewhere that isn't a chain or an overpriced tourist trap, sadly.

MawkishTwaddle · 02/11/2018 09:13

I'm quite sad about El Piano. I liked it.

MawkishTwaddle · 02/11/2018 09:18

Actually, I realise my post wasn't very helpful, sorry.

Kids always really enjoy Betty's - get there early though, to avoid queueing.

Or Wagamama - pretty reliable and the staff are friendly.

Harlequin Cafe, near the minster. My Num’s favourite. But it is upstairs, am not sure about access if anyone has mobility issues.

NoSuchThing · 02/11/2018 09:24

Num? Mum!

BabbysYed · 02/11/2018 09:46

Mr P’s curious tavern is awesome but more mid priced.
There’s a pancake house called my old dutch I think ? Lots of cute independent cafes , I’d go to one of those over a chain any day

MorningsEleven · 02/11/2018 11:36

Since El Piano closed Los Moros have taken over the building. Good news!

BikeRunSki · 02/11/2018 13:23

We’re in Panda Mami. It’s exactly the same as it was when it was Cosmo. My DC are the least foodie people you are ever going to meet. Panda Wotsit is cheap, filling, no waiting and not terrible. It’s 5 mins walk from the Grand Opera House where we are going this afternoon. It hits the spot perfectly.

MorningsEleven · 02/11/2018 14:24

Ooo what are you seeing at the Opera House?

BikeRunSki · 02/11/2018 14:52

Horrible Histories

Oh. I took DD to that a couple of years ago. Loved it.

FlamingJuno · 02/11/2018 16:52

I was going to express surprise that Plunketts was still there as XH used to love that place before we were married 35 years ago but I see that it has in fact closed.

Krieger · 02/11/2018 17:29

I had no idea it had closed. I haven't been to York for ages though. Probably won't now. Sad it was my reason for visiting
