What kitchen gadgets have you bought, then never used?

For me, it's the once used pasta machine that I was so keen to get my hands on. My dad bought it for me...I made some fancy bow shaped pasta and haven't used it again since (about ten years ago).

Same for the ice cream machine from Lidl last summer. I really wanted it. Made ice cream twice, it was rock hard both times :( Never used it since.

Also have a juicer. Random gift from my dad. Lives in the cupboard of doom. Never been out further than to look at it.

Ooh...annnnnd, I bought a cutter thingy for a whole pound not long ago, to make veg into fancy shapes. That's been in the cupboard of doom since too.

There is probably more tbh.

What about you lot?

Coffee machine which was a gift (I don't drink coffee) and a pressure cooker that I used once and I'm scared of it.

ParkheadParadise · 01/11/2018 17:10

I've got a cupboard in the utility room, I never go in this cupboard. If I opened it I could start my own shopping channel on tv.
Sometimes DH will mention some gadget for the kitchen, he can tell by the look on my face we already have one in the CUPBOARD

MustBeThin · 01/11/2018 17:39

I'm terrible for this, I absolutely love buying kitchen gadgets thinking I'm going to be the next Nigella Lawson then hardly use them. The one that cost the most and I've used about 4 times.....my magimix 5200xl i thought it was going to change my life but i cant be arsed to clean it after using it. Blush I even keep it out on the worktop but I still don't use it.

Bread Maker

I got rid of my actifry, I just make homemade chips and cook them in the oven. The actifry didn't save any time, took up loads of space when in use and it was noisy.

Instant Pot gets used once a week but really I should use it more because I always make stews, spag bol and curry but I keep thinking I'm going to burn it.

My most used items are my Nespresso Creatista Plus and my Kitchenaid Cold Brew thingy

chemenger · 01/11/2018 17:44

Slow cooker, used it once to make the worst stew I've ever produced, wet bland and water, put in a cupboard for a few years then sent it to the charity shop. Just not worth the effort to learn to use it. I love my Instant Pot but hardly ever use the slow cooking function.

BishopBrennansArse · 01/11/2018 17:50

Spiraliser

SecretWitch · 01/11/2018 17:55

Rice steamer. I was certain I would be making brilliant rice themed meals with steamer. I made a dish of rice and butter. Once.

user1981287 · 01/11/2018 17:59

My instant pot arrived two weeks ago and whilst it has now made it out of the box its just sitting there scaring me.

BettyOBarley · 01/11/2018 18:03

Spiralizer

Smoothie maker

Egg slicer (still in packaging)

Some weird little metal dishes to make tortilla bowls

PyongyangKipperbang · 01/11/2018 18:12

Oh where to start? I am a sucker for all things gadgety!

Spiralizer
Bread maker....actually I did use it but the size of the loaves just wasnt big enough for my large family so it got consigned to the cupboard of doom
George Formby grill
Pasta Machine (gave to a friend who wanted one who then passed it on again!)
Tassimo (got from Pasta machine friend...passed it onto DD)
Rice cooker
Filter coffee machine
Microwave egg "boiler"
Microwave bacon cooker (crispy bacon my arse......)
Milk frother

When I got my Tefal Cook4Me from a product test on here I was very sceptical, it seemed gimmicky and destined for the cupboard. I did my feedback after a month or so, towards the end of the test period and said that although it was good I couldnt see that the £300 price was justified for the amount I would use it. I used it (I thought) a lot in that period, 3 times a week. Now I use it most days and when I dropped it and thought it was broken I was gutted! Just goes to show.

obviouslymarvellous · 01/11/2018 18:13

Pie maker (used twice - what a complete faff it is!)
Nespresso coffee maker used a lot last year and zero this year!
I do miss my bread maker though I loved it it was fab! It broke and that was that haven't replaced it, too short on space with a pie maker taking up a huge chunk of that

Katedotness1963 · 01/11/2018 18:16

Bread maker
Ice cream maker
Actifry

All sold on without ever leaving the boxes.

NaToth · 01/11/2018 18:17

Tomato peeler

PurpleKittyKnitting · 01/11/2018 18:21

I have a little machine for making mini doughnuts with. Never used it. Not heard of one of the ingredients listed. I'll have to see if I can find another recipe

PyongyangKipperbang · 01/11/2018 18:22

I just remembered that mandolin. I was getting rid and my dad was falling over himself to have it off me. Mum was not happy. About a week later she said "That slicer thing is in the hall, can you give it away on that Freebay thing please?" "Why?" "Why do you think?" rolling her eyes and nodding towards my dad, sitting slightly shame faced with a massive dressing on his thumb :o

Also the salad spinner, I think my sister had that off me and then didnt use it either.

Not gadgets but they sort of count....a whole range of Kilner jars and bottles. How lovely they looked lined up on the counter, each of them holding not quite a whole box or bottle of whatever I had to decanted into them so the packets and bottles where sat there too. I used them for about 3 months and now they are used as restaurant decor in the pub I manage!

seekingclarity · 01/11/2018 18:24

@MustBeThin Magimix stuff just goes in the dishwasher. I can't remember if it says not to, but mine goes though on an almost daily basis for the las 15 years with no harm.

We use most of our gagets, including the ice-cream maker, waffle maker, sandwich toaster and deep fat fryer.

The Chocolate fountain however got used once before it went to the charity shop. It uses a ridiculous amount of chocolate (mixed with oïl to make it extra healthy) and makes an enormous mess!

CurcubitaPepo · 01/11/2018 18:27

Slow cooker. Thought it would change our lives. It just makes things so ....... wet.

Things we do use:
Bread maker (mainly for pizza dough)
Ice cream maker with built in freezer (£10 from a car booty 20 years ago)
Food processor
Toastier makes
Doughnut / waffle maker

Must admit though the person who uses most of the above is hubby who has more inclination than me!!

PyongyangKipperbang · 01/11/2018 18:32

A common mistake with these is to put in the same amount of liquid as you would with hob or oven cooking. You need to cut the amount of liquid by half as it doesnt evapourate off as it does with other cooking methods.

reallybadidea · 01/11/2018 19:55

My pasta machine got used quite a few times, but not for many years now. The spiralizer got used once, but I should really get it out again.

My ice cream machine gets used LOADS. Top tip - if you stir a couple of teaspoons of glycerine into the custard before you put it in the machine then it is like soft scoop ice cream.

lucysmam · 01/11/2018 21:49

I forgot about the steamer, and stick blender! Steamer also lives in cupboard of doom. It's moved house with me three times but never been used in any of the last three houses. Stick blender resides in a drawer...right at the back.

CurcubitaPepo · 01/11/2018 21:58

PyongyangKipperbang I’ll give that a try.

@reallybadidea I’ll givw your idea a try too. It sounds like a really good idea!

reallybadidea · 01/11/2018 22:08

Sitting here eating some roasted fig and honey ice cream scooped straight from the freezer Smile

Grumpbum123 · 01/11/2018 22:13

Potato ricer and fondue set, both bought for our wedding 14 years ago and never used

SheWhoDaresGins2 · 01/11/2018 22:15

A coffee machine and potato ricer

Staringcoat · 01/11/2018 22:16

Ooh I couldn't live without my stick blender! Use it nearly every other day; fantastically convenient for soups and sauces.

PyongyangKipperbang · 01/11/2018 22:18

Same here for the stick blender Staring I have actually used the little bracket thing that comes with it! It is always plugged in so I can grab it without faffing.
