I need a great bar or hotel around St Paul's - Chancery Lane for a drinks evening

Under ten people, city lawyers and finance folk. I want to find a relaxing and sumptuous bar with table service. Understated, not showy. Would be nice if they did excellent cocktails.

Any ideas?

It's quite a difficult area right next to St Paul's but Shoreditch or clerkenwell or Bloomsbury have plenty of options

Second the Rosewood - Scarfes bar there is fabulous. Not cheap, but great service, cocktails and atmosphere.

Zetter townhouse, fabulous cocktails and quirky surroundings. Book a sofa area in advance.

There are some nice restaurants a few steps away in you are looking to go on to dinner. The Modern Pantry would be my pick.

The Ned is great. The bar at the Rosewood hotel on High Holborn is also good.

Madison is always packed!

Following the crowd, the Ned if it's not too far away. Otherwise the Rosewood.

Try the Four SistersTownhouse. It's small and at the end of a courtyard/alley. you can book an area - my husband and I had a private party over the summer and can't rate it highly enough. Great cocktails, wines and drinks menu and delicious food
