Would you let a flat out privately?

I have a flat that at the moment is lying empty and someone got my number from one of the neighbours and asked if I’d consider letting it to him.

I have let a property before but via a letting agent so not sure if I should rent it privately or not.

Nope, not in a million years. At the moment my agent manages my property. In the future I'm planning to take over the management myself. But I will always, always use an agent to run the checks and do the initial paperwork. There are too many risks. Right now one of the biggest is if the tenant is later found to be in the country illegally, if you house him you're in some serious shit.
