Scan error

I had a growth scan 4 weeks ago and they said the babies head was measuring small and they asked me to come back 3 weeks later. 2 days before I was due for my next scan I had a bleed and was in hospital over the weekend. They then did the further scan on the Monday. I was told the bleed was due to low placenta although it had always been high before this. I was also told my baby hadn't grown since my last scan and was very small. They said they would continue to monitor for a week and then do another scan but I would likely have to have a c section at 34 weeks. They had me really worried and even mentioned the possibility of stillbirth if they didn't get my baby out soon. After a weeks daily monitoring I went back for my scan only to be told that the babies size was now fine and I wouldn't need a c-section and it must have been an error with the previous two scans. When I got home I looked at the new scan notes which said my baby was 1lb 6 heavier than the previous week and my placenta was showing as high. I don't understand how 2 scans a week between could show such different results and it could have been so wrong. They had me so worried after the 1st scan Now after the second scan I'm I'm just supposed to trust that everything is ok and go another 6weeks or more without a scan. Has anyone else had a similar experience or have any advice. Thanks in advance xx

I would get another opinion just to be safe and sure! Can you afford to go private?

Mevans1290 · 30/10/2018 21:57

No I wish I could I've already had to finish work early based on what they said at the first scan so things are really tight money wise xx

Hiya, I knew someone who was told her babies were really small but then they all grew at the same week if that makes sense, so when they were born the my wern't small at all. When it happened with each pregnancy that said that all her babies must grow at x weeks and not follow the normal
growth charts. My babies were prem and the scans and estimates weight were really accurate to the weights when they were born.
Good luck op and try not to worry xxx

That's pretty inaccurate. But which part?
The first scan or the second scan? And how can they get the position of the scan so wrong?

If it was me (and it is a little bit, in regards to the weight change and bleeding) I would request another scan in 2 weeks time to see where the baby is at with the growth.

They can't just throw such worrying stuff at you and then go "actually I don't think that after all" and expect you to just forget about everything they had said previously.

What's the next plan of action? Do you have a follow up appointment? Or any other scans booked?

I had scans from 20 weeks on due to bub not growing properly. Fortnightly originally and then weekly. I dreaded them. Sometimes bub appeared to be growing ok and other times, he’d stopped. Then the following week, they’d say he’s further ahead etc.

Our fetal medicine ob said it’s quite difficult to get accurate measurements at times and having different sonographers can lead to different results. Not really helpful, unfortunately!

Our baby was born weighing 500 g less than they’d estimated a few days before. It was a shock.

I think you do need to perhaps try for another scan if at all possible. But it sounds reassuring to have the weight increase by that much! Was bub moving lots in the last scan or more settled?

However, if you feel there might be any reduction in bub’s movements or something not feeling right, get straight to the hospital. Don’t think you’re being silly or put it off.

Throughout my 2nd pregnancy I was told the baby was small. I had multiple scans. My 1st has been 8 13 and I was surprised as this bump was bigger. I had a scan at 41 weeks where the last notes of the consultant said ‘this baby is now a normal size’.
He arrived 5 days later at 11 4 lbs. apparently the consultant notes were photocopied and put on the wall with the birth weight noted Underneath. Largest baby for 6 months at hospital

apparently the consultant notes were photocopied and put on the wall with the birth weight noted Underneath.

I wonder if they did that for a giggle or as a reminder to HCP's how inaccurate growth scans can be, or both?
I hope both.
