Healthy but filling breakfast ideas?

Hubblebubbletripletrouble · 30/10/2018 12:47

I'm trying to lose weight but also improve my mental health as I've been struggling a lot recently, and I know that a good morning routine would be really helpful to me.

I'll be honest - I usually skip breakfast and then end up buying a danish or similar on the way in to work. Blush Sometimes a banana but usually not.

When I've had cereal with milk in the morning it makes my stomach very dodgy shortly afterwards - so I'm ruling that out. Gluten is often a bit of a trigger for me (IBS), so I should probably not have too much bread etc, and the same for too much sugar.

I'm assuming something like eggs would be filling and healthy, but I'm a crap cook with no imagination and I have no idea where to start to be honest! Any ideas of quick but tasty things I can cook with a bit of flavour that will fill me up until lunch?

Can anyone help please?

If you have IBS eggs is a bad idea everyday. I often fart and get diarrhea by lunchtime. But it’s okay for weekends. For me, I have IBS and PCOS, and so often the best breakfast for me is either a collection of different nuts and a coffee, or peanut butter / hummous on wholemeal bread. I also sometimes switch things up and have lunchtime foods (chicken salad etc) for breakfast.

I have overnight oats every morning and they keep me full until lunch! The night before mix 40g oats with milk/almond milk, cinnamon if you like it and then top with fruit (I use frozen, it's cheaper and less waste and is defrosted by morning). If you prefer you could just make the oats bit and then chop a fresh banana into it the next morning. I mix a spoon of peanut butter into mine
Make it in a jar so you can take it with you and eat it when you get to work! Takes my stomach a while to wake up so eating at work is easier for me.

I’m maybe going to try eggs a few times a week and see how I go, they don’t usually give me a bad stomach.

I think I’ll try overnight oats but then I still have the milk problem..

Thank you for your suggestions Smile

Anyone else have any ideas/tell me what you have for breakfast?

Greek yoghurt with muesli, seeds, sometimes a chopped banana.

Salmon, avocado and plum tomatoes - maybe with an egg if I'm so inclined.

2 cups of tea and a cappuccino when I'm running late and can't be bothered.

AdaColeman · 30/10/2018 19:56

Porridge, I make mine with water, and just add a small splash of milk, or sometimes just a bit of honey.

SweetPeaPods · 30/10/2018 19:59

Porridge made with oat milk is lovely.
Scrambled egg is very quick. I got a lovely recipe for scrambled egg muffin on one of the bbc eat well for less programmes where it’s basically added to mug with some grated cheese so worth a google.

Another vote for overnight oats! I make mine with skyr yoghurt, hazelnut milk (innocent) and nut butter. Full till lunch.

Graphista · 30/10/2018 21:07

Just because you're eating at "breakfast time" doesn't mean it has to be "breakfast food"

You could have anything you enjoy for a light lunch. Omelette, sandwich, salad, beans on toast...

afishnotabird · 30/10/2018 21:09

I use Lactofree milk, it tastes like normal milk but has the lactose removed. I threw up every morning for months before I figured it out.

BikeRunSki · 30/10/2018 21:17

I make overnight oats with natural yoghurt.

TheClitterati · 30/10/2018 21:40

I have IBS too - kefir helps me sort it.

I usually have with blueberries and nuts (almonds / walnuts) or Dorset muesli with kefir and blueberries.

Hubblebubbletripletrouble · 30/10/2018 23:28

I’m sorry to be really dim.... but does the almond/oat etc milk contain no dairy?

And I’ve never made overnight oats...I’m guessing the clue is in the name, but how do you do yours?

afishnotabird Thanks I’ll try lacrofree milk if it tastes the same!

If you want eggs you can make breakfast muffins. Cook a batch and store in the fridge for subsequent days.

breakfast muffins

Porridge oats with some frozen berries stirred through is filling.

Protein smoothie- almond/oak milk, scoop of protein powder, banana, handful of spinach and 20g oats. Filling and portable.

doublethink · 30/10/2018 23:37

Overnight oats - before bedtime just bung some oats (I use gf), nuts, fruit (grated apple is a favourite here), cinammon and water or dairy free milk in a bowl, and stir. Cover.

doublethink · 30/10/2018 23:37

Or we do porridge in the slow cooker - it is so nice to wake up to a ready made breakfast!

IDismyname · 30/10/2018 23:40

I have kefir, a few nuts and a BioKult probiotic for breakfast. It’s helped my IBS a lot.

Hubblebubbletripletrouble · 30/10/2018 23:40

Thank you all! Flowers

How much water/milk do you put in the overnight oats?

OP posts:
doublethink · 30/10/2018 23:43

I just add enough to cover it, and then a bit more! You want enough so that the oats can soak it up and become nice and soft.

Smellyoulateralligator · 30/10/2018 23:45

Yes OP - they’re dairy free - rice milk is lovely. They’re all quite sweet though. Unsweetened soya is 🤮

MyDcAreMarvel · 30/10/2018 23:53

So you eat the oats cold?

doublethink · 30/10/2018 23:54

Yeah, I thought they were grim at first, but like them now! And my kids devour them like pudding Grin

mrbob · 30/10/2018 23:56

I also like overnight oats with almond milk, nuts and seeds, fruit etc. Also scrambled tofu is a good egg alternative- with possibly less belly issues (though I am vegan so my tastes have changed over time!) and you can have mushrooms, spinach, tomatoes etc with it if you want bulk. I often just have masses of fruit especially melon

ghostlygal · 30/10/2018 23:57

I have porridge with water and a splash of milk and dash of honey. But I also add in chia seeds, sunflower seeds, almonds, peppitas, flaxseeds etc soooo yum 😋
