Healthy but filling breakfast ideas?

I'm trying to lose weight but also improve my mental health as I've been struggling a lot recently, and I know that a good morning routine would be really helpful to me.

I'll be honest - I usually skip breakfast and then end up buying a danish or similar on the way in to work. Blush Sometimes a banana but usually not.

When I've had cereal with milk in the morning it makes my stomach very dodgy shortly afterwards - so I'm ruling that out. Gluten is often a bit of a trigger for me (IBS), so I should probably not have too much bread etc, and the same for too much sugar.

I'm assuming something like eggs would be filling and healthy, but I'm a crap cook with no imagination and I have no idea where to start to be honest! Any ideas of quick but tasty things I can cook with a bit of flavour that will fill me up until lunch?

Can anyone help please?

Hi Op.
I learned to make omelettes by watching Delia on YouTube, and her method is very good. Poached or scrambled eggs with smoked salmon? I buy lactofree milk for the house as DP is lacto free and I honestly can’t taste the difference.

If you find it hard to eat breakfast early, hence you tend to pick something up on route. Take a hard boiled egg, plus a pot with some greek yogurt with fruit, nuts or whatever you like in. You can hardboil a few eggs at a time, and just label them cooked and store in the fridge.

My go to, eat on the train breakfast is greek yogurt, with honey and berries. A handful of cashews in another pot. Banana. If I have to take the train it leaves at 7am and is a 4hr journey, so I would rather eat on route relaxed, then rush at 6am when im not even hungry.

I sometimes freeze a batch of breakfast burritos, which are amazing for a filling breakfast on the run.
I do large whole meal or seeded wraps, filled with scrambled egg, fried mushrooms, tomato (fresh/tinned/homemade spicy sauce/ketchup), wilted spinach and grated cheese (strong cheddar, mozzarella, Parmesan).
Dd likes fried halloumi cubes, ds likes crisp bacon or sausage too.
Sometimes add potato cubes or black beans.
Layer fillings, tuck in ends and roll up. Wrap in greaseproof paper then foil, label with a sharpie and freeze. They reheat really quickly in microwave with foil off for breakfast, or in oven if it’s on. Also if taking to work for lunch to microwave, they obvs keep cold for ages and aren’t messy to transport.
Same for standard burritos but these tend to be more carbs with rice, beans and wrap.

I am like you with cereal and milk! For me overnight oats have the same effect so I steer clear of them too!

One thing I do sometimes is egg cups which you can batch cook and keep in the fridge. I beat eggs add whatever ingredients I have in the fridge (mushrooms and spinach taste really good), season with whatever I feel like then pour the mixture in a greased (you can use low cal cooking spray) muffin tin and bake until cooked.

If I am feeling fancy and have a bit more time, I make a three egg white omelette and a slice of turkey bacon and put it on top of a slice of rye bread and add a handful of spinach. This one has a great balance of nutrients and keeps you full for much longer.

I usually have one of these -
plain porridge with milk no sugar
Overnight oats with blueberries or raspberries.
Cornflakes and banana
Yogurt and piece of fruit
Weetabix x2
Granola with milk, sometimes yogurt.
Slice of toast with just butter
And tbh sometimes I just skip it

I like crunchy peanut butter and a sliced banana on wholemeal toast. Often have some galia melon on the side.
I also have overnight oats-mix 20g of oats with a mix of Greek yogurt and quark and some frozen blueberries, raspberries and cherries with honey or sweetener; it's really filling and tasty.

I quite like the overnight oats idea as a lunchtime meal.

I like malt loaf with butter. I have it with a handful of nuts, and a big coffee made with milk. Keeps me full until lunch.

Probably not as filling without the big milky coffee though.

Another standby I remember from way back when getting near the end of a twelve hour night shift:

toast a thick slice of wholemeal bread
spread with mashed ripe banana
top with cottage cheese

Very sustaining and gave all the energy needed for final couple of hours on the ward!

noeffingidea · 01/11/2018 14:10

I usually have breakfast after swimming so I like something which feels like a proper meal. I normally have baked beans on toast (one slice of wholemeal toast with a poached egg). Another common one is a fish finger sandwich, mashed up peas instead of butter is nice and gives you one of your 5 a day. Today I had leftover lentil and vegetable soup, with a couple of slices of bread and butter.
I usually have a banana or satsuma for afters and a cup of coffee. I like to know I've already had a couple of portions of fruit/veg in the morning.

@Mummaluelae

Out of interest how do you get through the morning on just one of those things? I'm a teacher and couldn't as I am on my feet all morning. Do you have a mid-morning snack as well? Just curious.

ivykaty44 · 02/11/2018 07:49

Member, I live banana jam on toast, but I don’t use cottage cheese - a drizzle of honey is my preference 😄

Hubblebubbletripletrouble · 02/11/2018 12:58

RachelTeeth - the two eggs and banana pancakes sound YUM! do you just mash it all up then put in pan? Do you add anything else?

I've always been a bit bleugh about scrambled eggs - I think I had some horrible watery ones since and I'd stayed away since! Are there any particular tricks to making them and should you add anything?

banana jam on toast?? That's way too delicious for my healthy thread, go away!

These are all really helpful!

Re the milk 'intolerance' - weirdly I only seem to have problems after cereal or a smoothie with lots of milk. A big hot chocolate causes me no problems at all. So I don't know if I'm intolerant or only to cold milk?! If that's even possible.

Anyway I might work my way through all the different alternative milk suggestions - oat milk, rice milk, almond milk, lacto free milk... I haven't had a chance to buy any yet but will definitely have a go Smile

I really only like my own scrambled eggs. Just eggs, maybe a tiny splash of cream. Preferably cook bacon in the pan first then scramble the eggs in the bacon fat.

Smoked mackerel whizzed up with cottage cheese and horseradish on rye bread.
Daal.
Hard boiled eggs on toast.
Shakshuka.
Mushrooms on toast.
Avocado and feta on toast.

Basically, anything goes for breakfast round here but these are a few favourites.
